SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – The tourists involved in the accident which occurred at the Thread Falls Road aka Elevator Road last Saturday, January 25, 2014 have since reportedly been airlifted to Miami for treatment.

According to information reaching Virgin Islands News Online, the couple, whose names have been given as Michael and Alice Danoff, was transported on Sunday to an overseas hospital for emergency treatment after previously receiving treatment at the local Peebles Hospital.

Reports indicated that the man, who was said to be the driver of the motorcycle at the time of the accident, suffered severe injuries to the leg while the woman suffered lacerations to the head. Both occupants were wearing helmets at the time of the accident, according to Police.

The two had visited the Territory on Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas and were touring the area on a scooter motorcycle [licence MC0577] when the accident occurred on the steep hill.

Reports indicated that the driver lost control of the hill as he was negotiating a turn on the way down when the motorcycle collided with the guard rails and slid for some distance. At least one of the two occupants ended up in a clump of bushes over the guard rail, according to reports.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) related previously that the couple’s injuries did not appear life-threatening.

Two seriously injured in ‘Elevator Road’ scooter accident

SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – Two persons are now nursing serious injuries following a scooter accident which occurred on a very steep hill overlooking Sea Cows Bay today, January 25, 2014.

According to reports, a man and woman were negotiating a turn on a hill commonly referred to as the 'Elevator Road' on a scooter (licence plate MC-0577) when the accident happened.

The two persons involved in the accident are reportedly tourists with a Royal Caribbean cruise line ship in port today.

The man reportedly received severe injuries to the right leg while the woman is said to have suffered lacerations to her head.

The two were reportedly coming down the right hand side of the road on the hill in the vicinity of the home of former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Works, Mr Gary Penn when they collided with the guard rails and skid for some distance before coming to a halt.

Officers from the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene along with officers from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.

Public spirited citizens also assisted in getting the two accident victims to the ambulance which then transported them to the Peebles Hospital.

Police Information Officer Diane Drayton later confirmed that a tourist couple were descending the Thread Falls Road on a scooter when the driver appeared to have lost control and collided in to the hillside around 1:30pm today.

According to Drayton, "None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening. They were both wearing helmets."

This is first that I am hearing they were elderly. Even more dangerous for them on a bike. It was rainy, slippery and steep on that road.

They were not "elderly" only in their 60's, and in very good shape, however their injuries remain life theartening....

Are you all so unintelligent? "hi" the correct word is "were" not "where" and what difference would it make if they "were" locals? and Hmmm seriously.... the place is cursed and demonic!!! How about scooter, steep hill, slippy road and visitors not used to driving here! It is a very sad and horrible accident but it happens everywhere unfortunately.

Whats crazy is you not using your common sense. They were tourists, they don't know the place like we do. Its obvious that they were probably up on the ridge road or somewhere in the countryside and chose the sea cows bay exit area to get down to sea level, not knowing what to expect. If I were a tourist traveling upwards to visit the country side and I got up safely, I'll expect to come back down safely as well.
    • oh really (25/01/2014, 22:03) Like (8) Dislike (1) Reply
Probably because they are tourists and there is no clear indication that it is a 45 degree slope and terribly paved.

The elevator is no place for a scooter. Full stop!

That road is no place for even some cars, let alone a scooter with two people riding together. I heard that the two people were not "small" and in fact could be considered rather large.

That road is dangerous for most vehicles, even when the people driving know the terrain! A couple of tourists on a 125cc scooter who don't know the terrain are looking for an accident and have NO business being there in the first place!

There should be signs at the bottom and top of this road with a scooter and a line through it indicating that it is NOT SAFE for ANY scooters to use this road! Bloody stupid if you ask me!

I hope the tourists who were injured will fully recover and will have the good sense to thank their lucky stars that they survived. This story could very easily have had a very different ending. That hill is treacherous at best, even when driving the safest of vehicles. It is nothing more than a death trap for scooters!

For God's sake, our government needs to put signs at both the top and bottom of the hill warning scooter riders to find an alternate course. I think they should even make scooter access to that road illegal!

Most of the legal scooters that I have seen on the island don't have the power to go up the steep hills and don't have the brakes to come down. There tires are too small to handle the potholes and the rough roads so you combine all these factors with a rider with no experience and people are going to crash and get hurt. Renting these scooters with no restrictions will get more people hurt.

Why the hell NDP or VIP have anything with the tourists getting into an accient? Them must have been the road they were driving on and suddenly sensed that they are tourist driving and decides to do something bad? Really and truly come on!.....
  • Ah (26/01/2014, 10:29) Like (4) Dislike (1) Reply

Do not play the blame game. Yes, they were tourists. Yes, the did not know the road. Yes, there should have been warning signs. All of that is true. What is also true is that two people that we love are in serious condition. They are dear friends of ours and they could use our prayers not our blame.

First of all I wish these people a full recovery, hope all goes well for them. Secondly, I recall the Taxis are required to go through rigorous inspections etc. for safety however, who inspects rental vehicles and rental scooters for safety? Brakes? Servicing? I for one when renting vehicles am very picky about who I get them from. Some people are in business for a quick buck and cut corners. In this particular case, knowing the hill, even a properly working scooter would've had problems descending that hill with two adults on the back. But it still draws a bigger question, who is responsible for making sure people that rent vehicles, whtehr car or scooter, are in tip top working condition considering our steep hills?

To your husband, we all are so thankful for his care and courage during the accident. As we all here are trying to obtain as much information as possible, could you write more about the condition of Mike and Alice when he got to the scene? Did he see it happen, or just show up afterward? Where were they located in relation to the scooter? How were they doing?

As of recent, they are both still in a Miami hospital. Mike is still unconscious with a severe leg injury. Alice is conscious but is confused with memory loss due to a head trauma and lots of broken bones in her face, even with the helmet.

        Wishing them the best,
