UPDATE: Tortola winless at Liberty Day Races [Photo-slide Included]
It was the best result for the Virgin Islands as none of the visiting horses could have notched up a win in front of the above-average crowd. Northern Pike, Broken Home on debut and All Country also placed second best in their respective races.
The feature race, dubbed the Liberty Day Classic that fetched a handsome purse of $12,000, was won by Political Reporter of St. Croix while Diablo’s Fire of St. Thomas placed third. There was also a 4th place for Tortola as Good Prospecting and female jockey Maris Rivera were able to hold off Voice of Faith.
The first race of the day was won by Charlie the Runner jockeyed by Jose Lopez in a time of 1:42 2/5. Second was Blood in the Sand, third Meses Two Pieces and fourth was Gallant Ruler.
Mr. Gold Prospect with jockey Percival Williams secured victory in race #2 in a time of 1:12 2/5. Winning Actor had to settle for second, while third was Formerly Cat. Walk the Tiger and Tax Master were fourth and 5th respectively. Moments Away and Jockey Jose Lopez then rode to victory in race # 3in a time of 1:37 1/5. Rocky Miswaki was second followed by Runaway Vow and Dorado Missile.
Race #4 belonged to News Carrier and once again the winning Jockey was Jose Lopez. Second was Northern Pike, third was Bruno's Burst and fourth was Old Town followed by Stop Playing.
Race# 5 saw victory for Starship Voyage with the winning jockey, again a familiar name in Jose Lopez, and the winning time being 1:10 2/5. Second was Tortola’s Broken Home while Groomsman was third.
Race # 6 brought victory for Sweet Sight in a time of 1:41 2/5. Second was All Country and third Square One.
The final race of the day was won by Khun Dan in a time of 1:41 2/5 and became the fifth win for jockey Lopez.

Triple Crown
Just in case you had forgotten, the VI and USVI will be making horse racing history with its first triple crown. Tortola’s famous Ellis Thomas Downs will be where the first races will be run.
Representatives from all three racetracks (St. Thomas, Tortola, St. Croix) met on October 15, 2011 to discuss the event which is scheduled for early 2012.
