ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Despite a double of 11 points and 12 rebounds from Glenal Layne, the BVI was thoroughly outplayed at the U17 CentroBaskets in Puerto Rico on Friday August 16, 2013. They suffered a 97-69 defeat to Mexico.

Mexico raced to a 33-10 lead in the first quarter and the game  was all but over with the BVI unable to make inroads into the points deficit until the 4th quarter when they stormed a mini revival to outscore their opponents 25-10, but it was a little too late.

Layne finished with 2 steals to add to his points and rebounds and was the BVI’s stand out player. Stephon Caul scored 14 points with 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 4 steals, whilst Kimron Telemaque ended the night as the top scorer, notching 20 points from the bench along with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals.

Very surprisingly, both Rolando Rodgers and Franklyn Penn Jr sat on the bench all night.

The competition has now reached the semi final stage and the Dominican Republic will face the USVI at 6 P.M. while Puerto Rico will face Mexico from 8 P.M. today, August 17, 2013.

To confirm their progression, the Dominican Republic defeated El Salvador by a massive 81-23, dominating the entire game and the USVI progressed courtesy of a win over Costa Rica. The first quarter was well fought, 20-16, but slowly the USVI developed an advantage of 23 points. The best scorer for the US Virgin Islands team was Jordan Murphy with 24 points.

The last game of the night was the most important of all since if Puerto Rico wanted to qualify to the semifinals they had to win by more than 5 points. In an intense game, Bahamas took the lead in the first set before a Puerto Rico team that entered the court erratic and inaccurate.

The first quarter culminated, Bahamas 21 - Puerto Rico 12. The second quarter was another story as Puerto Rico responded to the orders of their coach, Danny Ortiz and began to take the ball to the paint.

The first half ended, Bahamas 34 - Puerto Rico 31. After the break, Puerto Rico adjusted to a zone defense that paid off and they took the lead for the first time on the scoreboard, 60-53, after two triples by Jerron Love Ramos.

The last quarter was the most exciting of all as Puerto Rico took the advantage and never let it go. The final score was Puerto Rico 85, Bahamas 66.

The best scorer for Puerto Ricans was Jerron Love Ramos with 27 points.

Meanwhile, Bahamas will also play the British Virgin Islands prior to the semi-final games.

BVI will continue to loose. Out young people lack focus, discipline, and dedication. You can practice for a week prior to entering a tournament expecting to bring home gold. Practice should be ongoing.

The BVI need to change the COACH, and get COACHES like Morrisson Wattley and Ronney GOLA Simmonds, then you will see a difference. The BVI will never win those tournament with that Coaching system. We really need that change.

The real coaches on the Island we're smart enough to stay clear of this fiasco! They needed to send that team that beat them here before they left...
  • that make sense (18/08/2013, 06:07) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
Sending Bash and Kennedy to coach was like sending the lambs into the lions den. Bash not even good coach here, and since when is Kennedy a coach! Then, you see the team? Hand picked Road Town, where east, where west, where cane garden and I know of better player in VG. If I was Myron I would have stayed away too. From what I hear this team or coaches didn't even have the full approval of the basketball federation for what its worth. This was a very poor representation of our basketball players and coaches. Myron was smart to stay away and some of the other more knowledgable basketball people were excluded from my understandings. Bet they all are glad now not to be associated with this.

No there will be no motorcade. Sneak them back in quietly and next time let's send a real team backed by real coaches. Then you may see real financial and governmental support.
