BEEF ISLAND, VI - The BVI Airports Authority has announced that the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport has resumed normal operations effective 1:20 p.m. today, Saturday, June 3, following a brief closure.

The Airports authority in a statement added, “Managing Director Mr. Kurt Menal said that repair works have been completed on the cargo aircraft which was disabled on runway 25 earlier today.”

Mr Menal added that the aircraft taxied off of the runway under its own power to the apron for further inspection while the runway was fully inspected by the Authority’s Operations Team to ensure all debris was removed ahead of reopening.

The Airport Authority further thanked the public for their patience during this service interruption and said it will strive to continuously uphold safety at its facility.

BEEF ISLAND, VI – Flights in and out of the T.B. Lettsome International Airport at Beef Islands in the Virgin Islands (VI) have been brought to a halt after a cargo airplane blew a tire upon landing at the airport, today, June 3, 2023, the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) says.

As such, the BVIAA in a release today said the aircraft has been left disabled on Runway 25 of the airport, awaiting spare parts to allow the aircraft to be repaired and removed.

“The authority hoped to resume operations at around 1:00 pm, today, Saturday, June 3, 203, the public will be kept updated on the re-opening efforts,” the BVIPA noted.

Closure will result in delays - BVIAA

The BVIPA added that while the closure will result in delays across the various airline networks, persons traveling today are encouraged to contact their respective airlines for information regarding alternative travel arrangements.

The BVIAA further apologized for any inconvenience caused due to the closure of the airport and thanked the traveling public for its indulgence as it seeks to endure that safety is maintained at all times.

Just about a week ago the airports were forced to close after the BVIAA could not satisfy the minimum requirement in staffing levels to ensure continuous operations of the Control Tower in accordance with applicable regulations.

If runway 25 is clocked then use one of the other runways!

Things like these do happen they were supposed to have a quick response team in place to deal with situations like this.

seems to be the only explanation for all these problems at the Beef island airport. The AA test flight plane landed there on 25 May and the next day the airport was closed. The AA flight was supposed to land this afternoon but again the airport is closed.

Maybe the UK has a spare aircraft carrier to lend the BVI while the Beef airport problems are resolved.

Let us be a bit more positive. These types of incidents happen all over the world. An airport situation happened right next door on St. Thomas just a few weeks ago where there were also delays for basically an entire day. The disadvantage that we have in the BVI is that as long as we only have one runway, which naturally will always be the case, any mishaps or issues will result in short or prolonged closures of the entire airport. Safety first.

I kept telling the OPERATION DEPT. you need these things in place, closing an airport for 45mins is okay, but not for 4-5 hours because we are not equipped. Cross-train people to do more than looking good.

The Miami flight might of had to land st.thomas if this had happened earlier because they wont of had enough fuel to be circling.
