CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI- Devon Smith missed out on his 26th first class hundred while Kavem Hodge and Sunil Ambris also gathered half-centuries as Windward Islands Volcanoes reached parity against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes on day three, Sunday February 21, 2016, of the WICB Pro League match on St Thomas, USVI.

Replying to Leeward Islands Hurricanes’ first innings of 327 all out on the penultimate day of the seventh round encounter, Volcanoes ended on 323 for six – to trail by just four runs heading into the final day at the Addelita Cancryn Junior High School Ground.

The 34-year-old Smith led with 89, Hodge chipped in with an unbeaten 71 while Ambris got 56.

Rookie Jerlani Robinson supported with 47 while Barbadian Kyle Mayers, who had earlier taken five wickets, returned to score an unbeaten 30.

Resuming the day on 21 without loss, Volcanoes flourished through a series of steady partnerships.

Smith and Robinson – the latter of whom had replaced the injured Tyrone Theophile with the score on seven the previous evening – put on a further 93 for the first wicket before being separated.

All told, Smith counted ten fours and a six off 193 balls in just under 4-1/2 hour at the crease while Robinson hit two fours and three sixes off 122 balls.

Smith then added 72 for the third wicket with Ambris whose innings consumed 92 balls, including four fours and lasted two hours.

Hodge, who has so far struck nine fours off 123 balls in nearly three hours, then posted 41 for the fourth wicket with Ambris and 37 for the fifth wicket with captain Liam Sebastien (13).

He was engaged in a 52-run, unbroken seventh wicket stand with Mayers at the end.

UPDATE: Cornwall smashes 97 for Hurricanes

- Leeward Islands Hurricanes reach 327 all out against Windward Volcanoes in WICB Pro League match in St Thomas, USVI

Rahkeem Cornwall put the Windward Volcanoes to the sword on Saturday February 20, 16 as the Leeward Hurricanes amassed 327 on Day Two of the West Indies Cricket Board’s 4 day Professional League match at the Adelita Cancryn Ground on St Thomas, USVI.

Cornwall narrowly missed out on his second first class hundred as Leeward Islands Hurricanes put up an impressive showing on a blustery cool day. The burly right-hander fell for a whirlwind 97, a knock that headlined a solid batting effort and lifted Hurricanes to 327 all out in their first innings at the Addelita Cancryn Junior High School Ground.

At the close, Volcanoes were 21 without loss.

Cornwall bludgeoned 10 fours off a mere 95 balls to give Hurricanes momentum late in the innings.

Resuming the day on 61 for two, Hurricanes also got 47 from Orlando Peters, 46 from wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton and 41 from captain Nkrumah Bonner.

Medium pacer Kyle Mayers picked up his maiden regional first class haul in only his second game, claiming five for 83, while fellow Barbadian seamer Kevin McClean claimed three for 56.

Fresh off their first win of the season last week, Hurricanes used key partnerships throughout the day to buttress their innings.

Bonner and opener Montcin Hodge (31) extended their overnight third wicket stand to 61 while Peters and Hamilton put on 67 for the fifth wicket.

Cornwall then added 70 for the sixth wicket with Hamilton and a further 77 for the ninth wicket with Jeremiah Louis, who finished on 27 not out.

The 23-year-old Cornwall seemed set for three figures when he was ninth out, edging Mayers to Devon Smith at first slip.

Rain affects day one of Hurricanes vs Volcanoes in WICB Pro League

Over in Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, the Leeward Hurricanes won the toss and decided to bat first in the WICB Pro League four-day game against the Windward Volcanoes, which started on Friday February 19, 2016.

At lunch the hosts were 61 for 2 with Montcin Hodge 24 not out and N’Krumar Bonner 20 not out.

However, the rains came down during the break and no further play was possible.

Sherwin Peters was the first to fall for just 5 and he was followed back to the sheds by Darren Cruickshank who was caught Tyrone Teophile off the bowling of Shane Shillingford for 14.

The full Hurricanes squad is Hodge from Anguilla, Peters from St Maarten, Cruikshank from Trinidad, Bonner from Jamaica, Orlando Peters from Antigua, Jahmar Hamilton from Anguilla, Aakeem Cornwall from Antigua, Jakes Taylor from St Kitts, Gavin Tonge from Antigua, Jerehmiah Louie and Quinton Boatswain from Montserrat.

The last 11 matches between the two sides have each produced a winner, but the Volcanoes comfortably won a low-scoring affair between the two sides earlier in the season.

Hurricanes enter the match in a robust frame-of-mind following a victory over the Scorpions in the previous round, but the Volcanoes will have to pick themselves up after the Pride rolled them.

Day two began at 10.00am today, after a short rain delay and a moments silence in respect of Andy Gantaume who passed away on Wednesday February 17, 2016.

The home team has retained their squad from last weekend, but the Volcanoes will have to try to recover without the World T20-bound duo of Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher, while fast bowler Mervin Matthew did not make the trip, due to travel complications.
