UPDATE: Sistah Joyce pleads guilty
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Joycelyn Searles also known as ‘Sistah Joyce’ appeared at the Magistrate’s Court today July 11, 2012, where her charges were again read to her, and she pleaded guilty and will be sentenced on September 11, 2012.
On the first occasion when her charges were read on April 4, 2012, Sistah Joyce had pleaded not guilty to both charges.
The popular local calypsonian face charges of unlawful possession of cannabis and intent to supply.
Represented by Herbert McKenzie, there was an amendment on the amount of cannabis she was carrying. According to lab records figures presented to the court, the amount was changed from 503.5 grams to 452 grams.
Addressing the court, Crown Counsel Representative Leslie-Ann Faulkner stated that the cannabis had a street value of $4,520, to which Magistrate Valarie Stephens ordered its destruction.
Court records indicated that on April 3, 2012 at the Road Town Ferry Terminal the stench of the herb took over the room and caught the attention of police officers in plain clothing.
Records further stated that when approached, the calypsonian denied nothing, which resulted in her being cautioned and taken to the Road Town Police Station.
The court also heard that Searles allegedly told police she was suspended from her job and invested $1400 in the cannabis, of which she was going to “smoke” some and sell some.
