UPDATE: Ritter laid to rest as hundreds turn out to bid farewell
The Virgin Islands Horse racing legend, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, contractor and friend to many, was laid to rest at the Methodist Church burial ground at Long Bush following a funeral service held at the Road Town Methodist Church. The church was packed to full capacity and left many standing outside in efforts of hearing the service.
Ritter died on August 13, 2012 at the Peebles Hospital after a prolonged period of illness. He was 69 at the time of his death.
Premier, Dr. D. Orlando Smith, in his tribute to Mr. Ritter noted the invaluable contribution he made in the horse racing arena and his role as a stalwart in the community. Ritter was very instrumental in increasing the popularity of horse racing in the VI.
The eulogy was read by one of his younger sons, Kenneth Mclean.
The horse racing legend is survived by his wife Marva, eight children and numerous other family members.
The former horse trainer and owner had a passion for horse racing in the Virgin Islands and was a key organiser of races for a number of years.
Mr. Ritter was more than just an organiser though; he was very much involved in the races also as he was the owner of the following race horses: Revenger, Ms. Symbolic, Ms. Jay, Ms. Pittiful, Lady Brava, Merry Boi and the famous Mountain Man, a native bred horse that travelled to the United States Virgin Islands to partake in Native Triple Crown.
The Staff, Management and Board of Directors of Virgin Islands News Online also express their heartfelt condolences to his entire family and horse racing fans at the passing of Mr Ritter.
