LONDON, United Kingdom— Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak will be the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK).

After the controversial Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson stepped down from the race to be re-instated as British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak and Penelope M. Mordaunt aka ‘Penny’ were the only two left in the race. Penny needed at least 100 backers to stay in the race, but she managed just 96 - four short - and left Sunak to take the top spot.

It completes a remarkable few days that started with Mary Elizabeth Truss aka ‘Liz’ resigning last Thursday and has culminated with the elevation to PM of the very man she defeated during the leadership race earlier this summer.

Sunak will be formally appointed to the role in a handover of power overseen by the King within the coming days when, aged 42, he will be the youngest PM for more than 200 years.

Meanwhile, Sunak has moved quickly to quash opposition demands for an early general election.

He is also reported to have told Tory MPs that they must “unite or die”, as he prepares to embark on what is likely to be a series of unpopular spending cuts during a cost-of-living crisis.

UPDATE: Boris Johnson pulls out of UK PM race

Controversial United Kingdom (UK) former Prime Minister Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson has pulled out of the contest to become the next Conservative Party leader and therefore the next prime minister, Britain’s PA Media news agency reported Sunday, October 23, 2022.

His decision leaves the path to No 10 open for Rishi Sunak, the former chancellor, who has a commanding lead over Penelope Mary Mordaunt.

Johnson claimed to have garnered the support of 100 MPs – the minimum number required to clear the threshold to appear on the ballot for the Conservative Party membership – but declined to run, saying “this would simply not be the right thing to do” as “you can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in Parliament,” according to PA.

On Sunday, several long-time allies of Mr Johnson, including Sue-Ellen Cassiana Braverman aka ‘Suella’ and Steve John Baker, threw their support behind Mr Sunak, the frontrunner in the race.

Rishi Sunak leads race for UK Prime Minister

Former British Treasury chief Rishi Sunak was the frontrunner Sunday, October 23, 2022, in the Conservative Party's race to replace Mary Elizabeth Truss as prime minister. Sunak garnered the public support of over 100 Tory lawmakers to forge ahead of his two main rivals: former Prime Minister Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson and ex-Cabinet minister Pennelope Mary Mordaunt.

Sunak, the former British Chancellor and a visible star within the Conservative Party, officially announced his bid today to become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom.

His announcement was all but a formality, as he had been tapped as a likely potential candidate to replace Truss, who announced her resignation as Prime Minister after just 45 days in office amidst a growing economic crisis in the UK.

The Conservative Party hastily ordered a contest that aims to finalise nominations Monday and install a new prime minister — its third this year — within a week.

Sunak, 42, was runner-up after Truss in this summer's Tory leadership race to replace Johnson after he was forced out by a string of ethics scandals.

Sunak has the backing of at least 124 Conservative lawmakers, according to unofficial tallies compiled by British news organizations. That's well ahead of the 100 nominations required to qualify.

Johnson, who has not yet declared if he is running, has public support from about 50 lawmakers so far, while Mordaunt had support from about 23, according to the unofficial tallies.

You obviously don't know that race isn't important to many people in Britain - unlike the United States.

Race is extremely important in Britain, but carefully concealed, especially among the leaders. It is the leaders that have selected Sunak, not the ordinary people. Because the leaders know their reputation and careers will be destroyed if they are plastered in the news as racist. But if you visit the blog sites, where the ordinary people are, you will see the truth.

Conservative party on the decline and will not survive the next general elections.

Will we’re calling for Mr Sunak since he fell out of grace with Borris Johnson, and at least he did not have an affair with a married you know.

Anyway even if he can win and stabilize the British economy he must also get it right with the Russians!

He proved very strategic not to have come out against the ill lost to what’s her name.

Rishi Sunak did NOT fall out of grace with Boris Johnson - Rishi Sunak quit as he felt he could no longer support Boris Johnson because of his lack of integrity.

Don't forget he was guilty as charged with Boris over the covid party fiasco and was cautioned by the police however Boris was the PM and had to go. Rishi in turn publicly resigned from government and ask Boris to step down, this is where he betrayed him I believe because they are apart of government with collective responsibility, you don't jump ship, you remain loyal till the end as Liz did. After Boris resigned he began campaigning with ad's which was done whilst he was in office, which suggest they were plotting for a while.
Nothing will change the bankers got their man, now let's see their next move.

Apparently Rishi turned up for a Cabinet meeting early and walked in on the party.... He was unaware that it was going ahead. His innocence was verified by other people at the party. Hence he didn't get in trouble like the multiple offender, Boris, did.
And besides, Rishi is tee-total & just works, he doesn't party!

@ london bridge. London Bridge has been falling down for over 50 years now. What they need to do is take the key and lock them up, as the childrens nursery rhyme says.

@ King Charles. You are delusional. He may have been born in Britain, but they don't consider him British by their standards. Stop acting as though you don't know. Racism is what the UK runs on.

You are totally wrong - have you been to the UK? Most people there are completely color blind.

That statement is rubbish. How can one be colour blind. What you are saying that you don't regard or respect a person with a different colour. If you say that you respect a person no matter what race or colour, then I can agree with you.

Yes, I was saying that Brits in general respect others no matter what race or color.

Boris is running for another office. Sunak and he will work together. The elementary level of these comments is bizarre, pompous and without any merit. Barely laughable. Do you dream and write your dream as truth. Where is all this stuff written? Yours was extremely interesting. You sound so authoritative yet, so completely confused. You can read it in any British news paper. Does anyone read British news? BVI is owned by the Brits. You could learn a lot

It's the Indian Ethiopians that try to over throw his imperial majesty, they can't stand being ruled by a black man, that's why they were isolated and cast away., They always being bitter an angry when black rule over them...They think they are one step below white and we are two steps below them ..Why they think that way. Wish I know,, Maybe because they are grafted product of mix breed..

        @ "No" your history.

Where did you get those ideas? Salassie looked very much like the East Indians. So based on appearance, why would they object to his rulership? Indeed, he did not consider himself to be black like, for example, the West Africans.

He was Emperor from 1930 but freed the Ethiopian slaves in 1942 only after pressure from the British who helped him drive out the Italians. So why do you stand up for him?
