ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Prince and Princess Show last evening, July 21, 2013 was a combination of brain, bravery, talent, humor and a pure passion to take away the top prizes of the night. At the end, the coveted title went to Jahkhoy Martin and J'dya Sprauve of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School.

The winning couple was by far the crowd favourite and also won over the heart of the judges.

Yes everyone had their favourites last night at the Prince and Princess pageant but when they walked into the halls of the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall for the show it was cleare where the maximum support was; it was for which ever school represented by the colour pink as that colour dominated the largest sections of the audience.

It is not to be said that Martin and Sprauve were without competition since most of the other couples did put on a good how, especially couple #5Aniyah Wilkinson and Alex Lawrence who were adjudged 1st Runners up. Also on their heels were couples #1 Alonzo Potter and Corin Bateman who were the 3rd runners up and couple #2 Kenja Molyneaux and Shannel Matthew.

Adding up to their win, couple #3 Jahkhoy Martin & J'dya Sprauve also won the prize for the Best Cartoon Wear, Best Talent, Best Evening Wear and the LIME sponsored prize of Most Popular Couple. The latter was not determined by the panel of judges of the night but rather by LIME themselves as fans were required to vote for the most popular couple of their choice via the use of their telephone. It was announced by the moderators that there was a tie for the most popular prize and fans were urged to break the tie by texting in some more votes.

The prize for Best Introductory Dance, Most Photogenic and Best Cultural Wear went to couple #5 Aniyah Wilkinson and Alex Lawrence. The prize for Best Introductory Speech went to couple #2 Kenja Molyneaux and Shannel Matthew.

Coordinator for the show, the 13th time around, was Representative of the Sixth District Honourable Alvera Maduro-Caines who expressed great satisfaction at the standard of the competition that was displayed this year. “A lot of work and monies went into this show this year and I must compliment all the sponsors, all the parents especially who had to make huge sacrifices, all those who support me and my team to make this possible I am really proud of the quality that we had. It was indeed a great night,” stressed Hon. Maduro-Caines.

According to the Coordinator, her deepest wish for the show was brought into fruition- the Cartoon Character segment. She said it was first introduced last year and it was one of her deepest desires to see it taken to a much higher standard this year and it did. The favourite Cartoon Character was no doubt  Dora as depicted by couple #3 who characterized the cartoons in real life to the last word.

Asked about what is to be expected come next year, Hon. Maduro-Caines said, “Bigger and better things.” She distributed prizes to all the parents for their commitment and hard work put in and each participant in the completion walked away with gifts.

Attractive prizes up for grabs at Prince & Princess Show today

-8 contestants to vie for the crowns at Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall today, July 21, 2013

Pageantry over the years has lost some of its following because of the steadily increasing numbers of such shows and in most cases the quality is not at the level designed to be. But there is certainly one level of pageantry that has not fallen into that category- the Virgin Islands Festival’s Prince and Princess Show.

This could be so because nothing is more pure, natural and innocent than the touch of a child. Those attributes have arguably kept the show alive and one of the most anticipated activities of the VI Festival season.

The show will be held today July 21, 2013 at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall from 3 P.M.

Speaking with Virgin Islands News Online, Coordinator of the event Honourable Alvera Maduro-Caines said eight couples will be participating in the competition and that she anticipates a massive turnout and a great show.

The contestants are Couple #1 - Alonzo Potter & Corin Bateman; #2 - Kenja Molyneaux & Shannel Matthew; #3 - Jahkhoy Martin & J'dya Sprauve; #4 - Joshanti Caines & Mackimba Fahie; #5 - Aniyah Wilkinson & Alex Lawrence; #6 - Keyona Cameron & Kesson Orosco; #7 - Malike Romney & Kyra Romney and #8 - Chantel Mowaghan & Nesta Gumbs.

“This year persons can also vote for their favourite couple by texting Lime 5004 and the number of their favourite contestant,” said Hon. Maduro-Caines. She added that this year the pageant committee could have only accepted eight couples so as to fit its budget but assured there are handsome prizes up for grabs.

“Winners receive a laptop each, $500.00 each, cellular phones and a variety of other gifts such as watches, cameras and jewellery. First Runners up receive a 27-inch Flat Screen television, $350.00 cash and other gifts; 2nd runners up receives a Kindle Fire, $300.00 each and other gifts; 3rd runners up receives a stereo set, $200.00 each and other gifts. Other participants will receive a DVD Player each, $100.00 each and a variety of gifts. We have prizes for the best of each category, ” Ms Maduro-Caines outlined.

The show carries five segments; introduction (75 points), Cartoon Character Wear (50 points), Cultural Wear (50 points), Talent (75 points) and Evening Wear (50 points).

Tickets cost $10 for children and $20 for adults.

I caught the show in time for the evening wear segment, and Couple #3 went through that with ease. The added touch was the song in the background. Both sets of parents must be so proud. Congratulations.

his show was unfair and everyone blatantly knew that. Couple #3 was good but Couple #5 was better. From their introduction with them playing the violin to their talent with the girl performing ballet and both of them dancing exceptionally to their extraordinary evening wear, but it is obvious that us in the British Virgin Islands do not know talent when we see it and always settle for ordinary. Where can our winning couple go and perform that acting talent that is just for the audience and ears of the BVI, no where in the world do children when performing in shows act and shout on stage as we do here they either sing, dance, play a musical instrument etc. It is plain as day that the judges and the audience don't know what is talent. The majority of judges were from the New Life Baptist Church, where is the transparency? This is why I prefer the Ms. BVI show because judges are rarely chosen from among the community and may barely know the contestants. The standards of this prince and princess pageant needs to be raised and there needs to be more transparency. The evening wear of couple #5 was exceptional with their pearly white gates their talent was amazing but in the BVI we can never think beyond the box and be extraordinary. This poor little place and their close minded mentality. It is a good thing that the winners of the show don't go abroad because I dont know where they would go and perform that talent and win compared to a couple performing ballet. But as we all know in the BVI is based on if you have money and of course..your last name!

I think they should call it "Cultural Talent" if that's what the judges are truly looking for. In which International Talent competition would couple #3 win with what was presented last night? Of-course such a performance would resonate in the BVI, but then re-name the category to "Cultural Talent" and I bet couple #5 and all the other couples would have brought it just like couple #3! No?

I to concur from the beginning when couple number 3 did something pertaining to the BVI I just knew that they would have given it to them, I thought it was nice but it pertained to the BVI. Even though the commentator said that the segment could have been any talent I just figure couple number 3 would have won it. We live in a box and that's what happens. We don't tend to see the bigger picture. I thought couple number 5 did extremely well and their ballet dance was indeed talent. Congrats to couple number 3 though, they did well.

I couldn't agree more. The level of professionalism and talent shown by couple #5 was evident, the result was not.

The show was great it was my first time attending. I thought all the couples did great but a few stood out, to me the show was between couples 3 and 5 it was tight. I think what made couple no. 3 won was the cartoon segment as the audience was fully involved from beginning to end. What i didn't like was the hosts MC whatever you called them. Mr. G for sure was out of place with some comments he made and them was just dryyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Note to the prince and princess committee for next year choose better MCs.

I looking ast all the pictures that are being posted online and just from looking at the photos and comparing the couples number three & five again I rethinking couple numbe five should have win. They look more refine to me. Sunday night I thought the judging was fair but now stilt walking for culture and the cartoon wear for couple number five was excelllent and then the talent was gangster like someboy previously mention. It look like both couples had the same idea for evening wear and I look at the two of them in the pictures and couple number five had look more regal and with great poise. It should've been a tie haha. Couple number five would represent tortola better and I think they could capture the audience with their talents that they did sunday night.
