UPDATE: Power boat fire deliberately set to destroy evidence- RVIPF
Police in a release today, July 22, 2023, however, said inquiries into the significant cocaine seizure, as well as the firearm, boat, and ammunition detained during the operation on Wednesday evening July 19, 2023, will continue despite the fire.
“In the early hours of this morning, one seized vessel, suspected to be involved in ramming of the police vessel at sea, was set ablaze in a calculated effort to destroy evidence.”
The release added that ahead of the fire, all necessary examinations were completed by the RVIPF, and no relevant evidence was destroyed by these actions.
No explanation for how security was breached
Police in the release, however, did not say how criminal elements managed to breach the security of the Road Town Police station and destroy important evidence in an ongoing investigation.
“The RVIPF wishes to renew its appreciation for the support and continued cooperation in this investigation which remains dynamic as investigators continue to pursue several lines of inquiry. The support of law-abiding members of the community is reassuring and sustains an unwavering determination to continue efforts to keep serving and protecting the Virgin Islands,” it added.
The force is asking that anyone with useful information on solving crimes to contact the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 368-9339 or anonymously through the Crimestoppers hotline number 8008477.

Powerboat reportedly set on fire in RT Police Station compound
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Word reaching our newsroom is that sometime this morning Saturday July 22, 2023, around 3:00am, a confiscated power boat connected to a recent drug bust; that was taken into police custody just yesterday, July 21, 2023, was reportedly set on fire.
Sources told our news center that residents were awakened by heavy smoke and fire emanating from the compound of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) Road Town police station, only to discover the boat was on fire.
The local Fire and Rescue Services had to be called in to put out the fire, however, while no one was injured, the majority of the power boat appears to have been destroyed and its structural integrity compromised.
While the name of the boat is said to be Donzi, the owner of the power boat is still unknown up to publication time. There are also reports that a nearby vehicle in the compound of the police station was destroyed.
Public alarmed at location of fire
What has alarmed the public, is that the fire took place in the compound of a major Police Station in the VI.
Local Fire Chief Zebalon A. McLean could not be reached for a comment, however, Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) understands that the cause of the fire is being investigated.
