Best finish for Petrovic on Day 5 of Youth World Sailing C/ships

The Virgin Island’s Daniel Petrovic had his best finish so far on day five, Saturday January 2, 2016 at the 45th Youth World Sailing Championships in Langkawi, Malaysia.

All classes and all sailors were out racing and were welcomed by 15 -17 knots of easterly breeze with gusts to around 20 knots. The current was light with relatively flat water for the penultimate day and sunshine.

Temperatures hovered at 30 degrees all day.

Petrovic finished Race 8 in 9th place, which moved him up to 37th overall in the 66 Laser Radial Fleet. It was also the first time he had finished in the top ten after a previous best of 29th.

The day also included Petrovic’s worst finish (49th), but due to the discard system, that one was quickly thrown out of his overall tally of 223 points.

In race One, Petrovic was 44th, in Race Two 29th and then 35th, 45th, 31st, 30th, 49th and 9th.

There were early gold's cemented on day five as some moved to an insurmountable lead ahead of the final day and as the sailors returned to shore, there were a couple that stepped back on to solid ground safe in the knowledge that they will be on top of the podium come the prize giving.

By stretching out to leads that cannot be passed, the Australian and USA teams already know they will be returning home with at least one gold each, including the first gold medal of the Youth Worlds, which went to Australian Alistair Young in the boy's Laser Radial.
