France has declared a national state of emergency and has closed its borders after scores of people were killed in multiple gun and bomb attacks in Paris.

At least 100 people are reported to have died at the Bataclan concert hall in central Paris.

Gunmen took many hostages there before being overpowered when police stormed the building.

Others died in a reported suicide blast near the Stade de France and gun attacks on city centre restaurants.

Paris residents have been asked to stay indoors and military personnel are being deployed across the city.

The deadliest attack appears to have targeted the Bataclan concert hall, with unconfirmed reports saying that concert-goers were being shot one by one. Police sources told AFP news agency that more than 100 people had died there.

Other attacks hit Le Petit Cambodge restaurant and nearby Le Carillon in the 10th district, where a BBC reporter said he could see 10 people lying on the road, either dead or seriously injured.

And an eyewitness told Liberation newspaper that he had heard more than 100 rounds being fired at La Belle Equipe cafe in the 11th district.

US President Barack Obama spoke of "an outrageous attempt to terrorise innocent civilians".

UK PM David Cameron said he was shocked and pledged to do "whatever we can to help".

At least 18 people have been killed in several shootings in the French capital, Paris, as well as explosions near the Stade de France.

French media say at least 15 people have been killed near the Bataclan arts centre. A hostage taking is under way, with reports of up to 60 held.

Reports suggest some spectators are leaving the hall, with police raiding the venue.

Three explosions are also reported outside a bar near the Stade de France.

At least one man opened fire at a restaurant in the 11th district, causing several several casualties.

A BBC journalist at the Petit Cambodge restaurant could see 10 people on the road either dead or seriously injured.

Police have now arrived and sealed off the area.

There are reports of up to six gunmen involved.

Reports say French President Francois Hollande was watching the match at the Stade de France and has been moved to safety.

The French anti-terror prosecutor has begun an investigation.

President Barack Obama was briefed on the developments on Friday.

It is not the guns, it is the people in a certain group and the nonsense they believe. These people will use whatever they get the hands on, be it bombs, guns, knives, rocks, sticks, airplanes. The authorities must be prepared to use serious force whenever these people start to riot and make unlawful demands, which eventually they will do here.
