PORT PURCELL, Tortola, VI- A senior source, speaking to our News Centre on condition of anonymity, has revealed different reasons why the BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission (BVITB&FC) headquarters in Port Purcell remained closed today, August 15, 2024.

According to the source, the office had no internet and some staff also had challenges caused by being without power and water.

“We closed because we lost internet connection from the service provider and [the] majority of the staff is still without water and electricity. Nothing to do with flooding,” the source told our News Centre.

There are reports; however, that the BVITB&FC was indeed affected by flooding in the Cocoplum Building, although not the BVITB&FC office itself, and that there was need for much cleanup.

The BVITBFC is located on the second floor of Cocoplum Building, J.R. O’Neal Drive, in Port Purcell.

Flooding of new BVITB headquarters forced closure & work from home!

After moving to its new headquarters in Port Purcell less than a month ago, the BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission (BVITB&FC) was forced to close today August 15, 2024, due to the first floor of its new office building flooding out.

Persons familiar with the matter told our News Centre that some officers and a cleaning company spent the day cleaning as the office was not conducive for workers. The new office headquarters is located in the Cocoplum Building, J R O’Neal Drive at Port Purcell, on Tortola.

Photos and videos hit social media of the flooding conditions of the new compound over at Port Purcell.

The flooding was caused by Tropical Storm Ernesto, which brought heavy rain and winds across the Virgin Islands on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

Officials at the BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission are tight-lipped on the cause of the work from home/work remotely; however, we were told that Director Clive L. McCoy is overseas.

Meanwhile, the BVITB&FC Headquarters is slated to open tomorrow, August 16, 2024, according to a notice from the BVI Tourist Board this afternoon.

TS Ernesto caused many damages

The storm caused much damage to roads, homes, schools, churches, businesses and hillside erosion. Many big trees have fallen, blocking roads and driveways and some have fallen on cars and homes.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said the damage assessment to come up with a cost has begun.

The Civil Registry and Passport Office also remained closed today due to the effects of Ernesto. Some statutory agencies are reportedly still without electricity.

I don't think they should have moved out of town. They need a central location. Taxpayers dollars lost again.

The Port appears to be higher than that whole area. Businesses in that area of Purcell have been experiencing that problem for decades. Just talk to the dry-cleaning business in the area, talk to the restaurant next door. Supermarket in the area parking lot floods. Radio doctor floods. This is nothing new in this area.

Because something happened for many years does not mean we should allow it to continue to happen, especially an area that is a few feet from the ocean and newly constructed buildings.

this is a crying shame. Imagine!!! THOSE BRAND NEW BUILDINGS. FIRST RESIDENTS TO MOVE IN AND NOW THIS? Couldn't this be foreseen by the owners, architects, Tcp etc. A real darn shame. Didn't they learn anything from the floods just before IRMA? In August of 2017. the who area was totally submerged. and they built in the same spot and very low to the ground.

Newer buildings needed to be higher off ground. Can only imagine the lower buildings. The water movement was very destructive. Might have to work on a drainage plan, if possible. This storm was different. It had a slight feeling of hurricane Irma. Really weird. All the best to the property investors. Looks nice so far. Just more unforeseen work added, to be done.

Obvious, no electricity no internet..imagine a poor man like me had electricity and internet all night, was never out because I had a generator. What happen to the back up generator for this building? This is such an important Dept. Why rent a building with out a back up generator knowing we are prone to Storms
.They are only proving Cindy right when she spoke of their incompetence...

It is really sad to see that my BVI was the county of envy in the Caribbean and we could now easily be the laughing stock of the Caribbean with all this flooding every chance it gets because of greed from our politicians because we fail to plan. It now seems like this will be our reality for future rain storms and the sad part is there ain't no quick fix.

Pictures make it look like the water is still there. I drove past yesterday and today... ground is dry! Those buildings ground floor is higher. Picture making it look like something it is not.

No back up power though? Come on BVI Govt.

This picture looks terrible and not a good look for these brand new buildings. Who would want to rent any places here if it will flood every storm? I think the owners Mr. ONeal and family should issue a statement regarding this situation. They are experts so I don't understand. Plus if a hotel will be built in this same area, will guests be walking through muddy water? Boots anyone?
