UPDATE: Mrs BVI 2017 seeks to reignite the call to be ‘our brother’s keeper’

The Mrs BVI/Mrs Globe pageant is a unique platform for married, separated, divorced or widowed women to contribute meaningfully to their community; and Walcott-McMillan who contested two elections, and held various pageant titles in the past announced that she welcomes this opportunity at this time in her life.
Lifeline
The newly crowned Mrs BVI disclosed that the platform “Lifeline” is dear and personal to her as she has been facing a number of personal setbacks, storms and hurricanes; including the unfortunate end of her marriage among other situations. This trying time she said has made her conscious of how blind persons can be to cries and calls for help.
The 2017 Mrs BVI announced that her experience has made her realizse that it is easy to miss the signs that a lifeline is needed, because some of the persons who are crying for help are those who appear to have it all together; and we assume are the strong ones.
She said that she is thankful for the opportunity to wear the Mrs BVI crown and announced that she plans to use her reign for not only the empowerment of women, but to reignite the call to be our brother’s keeper:
“Crowns are not only beacons of light, they do not only shine above the person that wear them --singling them out in a crowd or mere tools of elevation, but also inclusion bringing dynamic talents together for common good…The next year of my life belongs to the purpose of this crown.”
Be your brother’s keeper
In noting the central purpose and reason for her platform the new title holder announced: “An old Virgin Islands proverb says, when your neighbor house is on fire, throw water on yours. Look around you…look at the faces…they may have a bed that is burning right now.”
She added: “For all intents and purpose they encapsulate what our society has said success should look like, but when life happens – a lot of us cry on the inside, too afraid or overwhelmed to confirm that we may be in need of help, in need of a kind word, a spark of positivity, financial assistance. It seems like you are having too many Job-like moments and while you keep the smile plastered on your face (your mask well in place); the veneer slightly cracks until it widens into a chasm.”
Mrs Walcott-McMillan announced that life happens, but she said that sometimes the blow comes in waves that can be overwhelming. In moments like those, she said that it is important that as a community every resident is able to offer a lifeline. Therefore in an effort to carry the message the Committee is finalising a number of events, and activities that will be announced in coming weeks.
Empower, Inspire & Encourage
It was also mentioned that the Family Support Network (FSN), the BVI Cancer Society, and the HIV/AIDS Foundation would be beneficiaries of the events; and activities being organized.
Founder and Director of WIN BVI, Alicia Green explained that WINBVI’s goal is to empower, inspire and encourage residents to join the Committee in its efforts to impact change in a positive way through the various programmes and initiatives. The ultimate goal is to revive and build a bright and healthy community.
The Founder announced that the Committee is ready to roll out the activities necessary to promote the Lifeline initiative. She also announced that WINBVI is continually supported by a number of businesses in the community that are committed to fostering empowerment: “I would like to thank our sponsors for this year...National Bank of the Virgin Islands, Road Town Wholesale, Ministry of Education and Culture, RKG Consulting, Bella Blooms, Beautiful By Jasanay, Journey Health Spa, Akeem Crabbe, Akiya Brewley Graphic Designs, John Black photography, Chef Mohamed and the Arab community, including Hazems, Rotaract Club of Tortola and our many corporate supporters and friends for making our 2017 Fundraiser a reality. Now the work begins.”
