ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Greg Pearson and his wife Vicky Pearson yesterday September 15, 2015 drove away with the brand new Mercedes Benz having won it in the BVI HIV/AIDS Foundation/Caribbean Insurers Limited raffle draw on Friday September 11, 2015.

And in an amazing show of benevolence, Pearson, a Canadian businessman who lives in the territory and who had purchased 10 tickets with a view to winning the car, has donated $18,000 to the Foundation to enable it to meet its target of $50,000, having raised $32,000 during the raffle.

Pearson, who said that he had never won anything in his life except for this vehicle, said that he began to be ‘hated’ by some of his friends when they heard that he had won, as they had also bought tickets with the hope of winning the car.

“When my wife heard I had the winning ticket she grabbed it and said it's mine,” he said jokingly.

Following his being handed the keys to the vehicle by Chairman of the BVI HIV/AIDS Foundation Cid Nava, Pearson said that he wanted to ensure that the work of the Foundation could be effected and as such he and his wife made the decision to donate the sum of $18,000.

Nava was overwhelmed by the donation and the show of support by Pearson to the work of the Foundation and expressed the Foundation’s appreciation for the gesture.

Director at CIL Simone T. Monsanto said that CIL will provide one year’s worth of insurance coverage for the vehicle.

“We were happy to work with the BVI HIV/AIDS Foundation on this venture and we will do other events to raise funds for the Foundation and other causes in the community,” said Monsanto.

- raffle nets $32,000 as VI community supports cause

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Greg Pearson is the winner of the brand new Mercedes Benz SUV, following the drawing of the BVI HVI/AIDS Foundation raffle last evening September 11, 2015.

The drawing took place in the courtyard of Caribbean Insurers Limited and was accompanied by a fashion show by UMI Fashion models and the revealing of the contestants for the Miss World BVI.

Following the modelling and the Miss World segments, the winning ticket was drawn by current Miss World BVI Rosanna K. Chichester. Coincidentally, Pearson's name was pulled a second time after there was no success in contacting him when his name was pulled the first time. However, a staff of auditing firm Deloite & Touche certified the draw.

“The event could not have gone better. Caribbean Insurers Limited has done such a beautiful job at UMI of bringing this together and putting up a great event that in this year has benefitted the HIV/AIDS Foundation so much,” said Cid Nava, Chairman of the BVI HIV/AIDS Foundation in an interview with this news site.

He said the raffle was able to raise a lot of money for the Foundation which will be used to fund medication for persons living with HIV/AIDS and also pay for their lab tests.

“We are happy that even without this event, we made $32,000 from the raffle which is unbelievable. We brought competitors together to donate money to the cause…different insurance companies, different banks, different cell phone companies. We had all of the community involved, which at the end of the day was exactly what we wanted to accomplish.”

“We want to raise awareness within the community of the importance of HIV in the territory. We are happy that the prize has gone to someone who lives here in the BVI although the number he gave was from out of town. We are very excited and I can’t wait to give him the key,” added Nava.

Treasurer of the BVI HIV/AIDS Foundation, Arletta Bickerton said that at one stage they were questioning whether they would have been able to sell off the tickets. “And tonight I almost came to tears at how this BVI community really came together for the selling of 452 tickets. People thought that we got the car for free. The car was not free. We had to pay for the car and after paying for the car and after paying for the car at $32,000 in profit we could not ask for anything more,” she said in a comment to this news site.

The initiative is a great one, but if they only receive $32, 000.00 for that vehicle which I believe is worth more than that, then what was the purpose? The general public didn't rely support the cause and that's sad.

They made $32000 not collected, I would say that is a great success if they paid for the car and all other expenses and had $32000 left over,

Some very basic math for you; 452 tickets at $200 each yields $90,400. If they made $32,000 in profit the car plus other expenses was around $58,400. Got it?

Clearly, you need a flashback to Math class. 452 tickets @ $200 a piece=??? , subtract the $32,000 from that you get the price they bought for the Vehicle.

They made a profit of $32,000...452 tickets were sold which would total to $90,400 and after paying for the vehicle/etc they made a profit of $32,000

I much suspect they were making a donation to the cause rather than focussing on winning the car

We need NHI debate. Why that cap? how convenient the cap is. evil. He who earns more pay more then you can reduce it from 7.5 to 6 percent for all. we all pay less. its very expensive in its present form. a lot of people in the BVI make more than 6,000.00 a month. or have a 9 thousand cap instead of 6. that can still reduce the fee for everyone

Is the winner the person for the first ticket that was pulled? Or is he the person for the second ticket that was pulled? Or is he the person for the third ticket?
it was stated that only ONE TICKET WOULD BE PULLED. The cell number would be called and if the didn't answer their name would be called out loud.
It was made clear to us that ONLY ONE TICKET would have been pulled.
I feel it was a cheat thing to have pulled two more times.

He was the winner of the first ticket drawn, and when it was decided on his behalf to do a redraw, another ticket of his was drawn too.

@Cane. Thank you for answering my question. The night was good for me up until that point. I was feeling bad for the person of the first ticket. Thanx though for clearing it up.

@VG; you don't care where this person gets the money from but you want more: I am very mindful of money laundering but that is only applicable to certain sectors of our country. Lord help us!

Blessing to the Pearson. Not much local resident would have given back to the foundation not even $500.00. If they had win.
Wish the churches can help more with the community from just collecting tax free tidings. They need to open more soup kitchens for the less fortunate in our community.

it is amazing how some persons in BVI can float around money will some of us gets questioned, home boy gives away 18K and all was well: every time my black @$$ goes to the bank with over 5k its questionable ( I am a business man as well) just say, no need to jump all over me

How wrote a check so the money was already in the bank and accounted for. Am sure, just like you if he turned up at the bank with $18000 in cash to deposit he would have had to explain its origin. This is standard for large deposits of cash. Some people always looking to cause a divide.

Wize Up, stop talking sh^&. Did it say he reached into his pocket and gave them 18K? If he has an account with sufficient funds and wrote that check, what's the problem? Locals do it all the time. Stop looking to raise an ants next over nothing man, ya'll sickening like !@$#%. You comparing this man donating money to charity by way of a check, to you walking into the bank with 5k cash and being questioned. Where you went school? Under a tamarind tree?

@ schups: you are an @$$ not a whole one as yet: whether the money is in his pocket or whether it is an account; it is the movement of large sums of Money through the territory: one set can do so freely while others comes under suspicion: but I understand your scope and your defense: I actually went to school under the tree and did so with your ****** but leave that: I also have my own property and my own business: what do you have; here defending: the issue is not the money be it cash or check it is the source of the funds; keep well and remember that Jesus loves you

This organization is one that has strayed so far from its founding principals that it is hardly recognizable. I strongly appeal to the agency that monitors the NGO's in the territory to look deeply in to the workings of this organization. When the head is a snake..........

Wow! I cannot believe some of these comments! First, everyone's funds are examined, whether it is cash, checks, wire transfers, bank accounts, ATM withdrawals, source of income is examined and scrutinized! This man won with the first draw, then when it was decided on his behalf to redraw another ticket of his was drawn, that in itself seems Meant to Be! Then he decides to give back to a Charity so it can meet its goal to continue awareness, education, confidential free testing, support, and medical attention, and he is scrutinized again!! I have read, it was rigged, he's this, he's that! To those with such negative comments, you should be ashamed of yourselves! Then this last comment that the "Head is a Snake", the President of this Foundation has donated his time, energy and efforts!
