UPDATE: Match races on at Ellis Thomas Downs today, July 14!

President of the VI Horse Owners Association, Karen Smith-Aaron told this news site previously, “Although we have received several enquiries regarding the August Tuesday races, there are no horses participating from St. Thomas or St. Croix this Sunday [today].”
In the absence of overseas participation, the President announced that the Virgin Islands horse owners were still interested in running their horses to prepare for the August Tuesday races.
The gates will be open at 2 P.M. for the event and the entrance fee for adults is $5.00 while children under 12 are free.
There will also be entertainment for the children, live entertainment, along with drinks and food on sale.

No decision yet on horse races for July 14 - Smith-Aaron
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – No decision has yet been made on planned horse races slated for Ellis Thomas Downs on July 14, 2013 according to President of the VI Horse Owners Association, Mrs Karen Smith-Aaron.
The races are expected to see participation from local horses as well as horses from St Thomas. Previously, it was disclosed that the races would act as a warm-up to the annual August Tuesday races held at Ellis Thomas Downs.
Although it had been revealed that condition sheets had been issued for the scheduled races, the circumstances surrounding the delay in any official announcement remain unclear at this time.
No details have been disclosed regarding the amount of races scheduled for next Sunday’s races or the number of horses expected to participate in the event that the races will proceed.
Mrs Smith-Aaron indicated that updates would be provided as soon as a decision has been made.
“We basically have to wait until St Thomas [horse race event] runs because submissions depend on how they come off of that race,” Mrs Smith-Aaron had told this news site recently.
She further disclosed that horses may not arrive from St Thomas for the July races and this is “up in the air” for the moment but the Association remained positive that races can be hosted at the local track for the scheduled date.
The atmosphere preceding the races was dampened somewhat by the mysterious death of Tiger’s Mischief, a 6-year-old mare found dead at the stables in Sea Cows Bay on June 25, 2013.
Owner of Tiger’s Mischief, Roger White aka Kumo related that there was no disturbance within the stable and the trainer reportedly found the horse just as he had left it on the previous day.
He presumed the animal suffered a heart attack based on reports from the trainer, but stated at the time that there was no way this could be confirmed on the island.
