ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The driver of the truck involved in an incident that resulted in well-known businessman Martin A. Alphonso aka ‘Tony’ sustaining serious injuries at his place of business in Fish Bay on June 10, 2020, has turned himself over to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

According to information reaching our newsroom, the man, a Jamaican, turned up at the Road Town Police Station with a lawyer on the evening of the day in question.

Allegations

Further reports reaching our newsroom state that the man went to Alphonso's Garage, owned by Mr Alphonso, to make a purchase when Mr Alphonso instructed that the key to the vehicle be handed over since there were defaults in payment for the said vehicle.

An employee of the garage allegedly retrieved the key; however, the accused requested the key to get his belongings from the vehicle. When given the key; however, he allegedly attempted to drive away.

According to an eyewitness, at that point, Mr Alphonso, who was standing close to the vehicle, reacted by holding on to the moving vehicle but stumbled and fell.

It is said the truck ran over the lower extremities of the businessman and he was also hit in the head by the vehicle.

The man is currently facing charges of Reckless Driving and Negligent Act.

Police Information Officer Akia L. Thomas had confirmed the accident at Fish Bay, which she said took place after 3:00pm on June 10, 2020.

"Details surrounding the accident are unclear; however, one male was transported to the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital for treatment. The investigation is ongoing," Ms Thomas said.

As a BVIslander born and raised, I would really appreciate it if you would ignore the simple minded, trouble-making imbeciles that continuously blog about "island people or island man". I ask you to stop showing your prejudice as well in actually believing that that could possibly be the mindset of BVIslanders at large. For the proof is in the pudding, isn't it? If BVIslanders didn't like people from all around the world, we would not be outnumbered now in our own country would we? Both of you need to stop. I am tired of reading your silly blogs.

No matter what argument they had, you are NEVER supposed to leave the scene of an accident. Now something that would have been just an unfortunate accident, is now a felony.

Hitting someone with your car, driving over them and leaving the scene is no accident. In an accident you stop, call the necessary officials and make a report. This driver did all of that and left him for dead, he didn't care, now he is in big big trouble and showed up with a Lawyer, so he knows he did wrong. Book him now! I hope Mr. Alphonso recovers well. This is sad and shows when arguments get out of hand and irrational thinking and anger take over.

I really don't know the circumstances surrounding this matter but what i gather from reading the three major news outlets stories about this incident it would appears that a crime was committed. Also a pic of a man from a well known Caribbean island that is # one in the region for homicides is posted on Facebook or WhatsApp. Now this is not a joking matter . My heart is broken for toney even though i had to tell him what time it is a few months ago but i never keep malice in my heart against him . I only hope is an accident but i smell a crime. Any expatriate commit a willful act on a non violent person like toney your days would be bitter . Whether you have belonger status or not if this is a crime your status must be taken away but not before you serve 15 to 20 yrs in prison and toney sued you for every penny you have if you have any and then donate it to a charitable organization and then deportation. I smell attempted murder here.

I Cannot comment much since I do not know the facts in this incident/accident. Toney is my friend. However, you only mentioned ex-pats. Let me correct you "Anyone regardless of his/her nationality, social or any other status, who commits a willful or unlawful act against any other person should feel the full force of the Law. That includes a B.V. Islander. Nationality race or social status should not determine the gravity or penalty for any crime. Best wishes Tony but I will wait for the facts before "I cast my vote".

You said best wishes, but.. you also said you were Tony’s friend. Your comments clearly show you are no friend of Tony. There are no buts in friendships. Tony was hit and ran over , the perpetrator then stopped his vehicle outside the garage clearly saw he ran over him and then took off. Attempted murder nothing less. Tony I wish you a speedy recovery. You have a good heart and have helped this BVI community with many donations that the public is unaware of.

If the allegations that am reading here is true then With all due respect, Tony caused it to himself. Firstly, the vehicle was not a rent to own so he cannot arbitrarily demands the keys if the man owed him he can take legal action. Secondly, if he attempted to hold on to the moving vehicle and tripped over then it is his fault and not that of the driver. The charges mentioned here, reckless driving - section 29 of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 218 states, “A person who drives his vehicle on a Public Road in a reckless manner, having regards to all the circumstances and the nature and condition of the road at the time is guilty of an offense. Reckless and Negligent Act- A persons who drives in a manner so rash so as to endanger human life and safety is guilty of an offense. From what I read the driver of that vehicle is not guilty of any of those offenses, the police will just be wasting time to charge that man. As I said before the fault seems to rest solely on Tony. If he had allowed the vehicle to go and take the necessary acting afterwards all what happened could have been avoided.

Also, I wonder, did the driver stop or did he just keep driving. He only just turned himself in so I'm guessing he kept driving which to me hints on intent or some wilful act and not just a mere 'accident'. Attempted murder...manslaughter. He had opportunity, motive, intention. When he finally turned himself in, it was after with an attorney who already helped to put a story together but when you analyse the whole thing, the story still raising questions. There are 3 parts to every story and we only hearing the one that was put together by the lawyer. Waiting to hear parts 2 and 3.

Base on what I heard the driver stop to assist when he realize the Business man was hurt and his employees rush him! I hope the truth prevails. God is in control. I wish Mr T a speedy recovery. I think bully was use in this case, How can you took away someone keys out the vehicle and demand to seize it with your employees, on top of it try to stop a moving vehicle as heard he was holding on to the side meaning he was not hit from the front of the vehicle. This could of being differently if Mr T says the previous owner owes him money as this don't have nothing to do with the new owner/driver and let the police deal with that. Accident is something that can happen to anyone, so sorry this result in injury. Speedy recovery.

Based on what you heard..... really, then you continue on,point blank there are no truths to your heard gossip. This is why cameras are in place and they tell a different story so I'm sorry to all the haters and ill wishers, the stories you so desperately want to believe just is not what happened now do yourselves a favor and go about your lives and stop listening to street gossip.
