CAPOONS BAY, Tortola, VI – The importance of reading can never be overemphasized and this was the motivating factor behind First District Representative Honourable Andrew A. Fahie and his team leading an initiative that encourages youths to read.

Each child of the Leonora Delville Primary School in Capoons Bay was today furnished with a copy of a book written and produced by local resident Ms. Vilma Donovan Chung. That initiative was further supported by a brief motivational talk by another local, well known rapper Travis Osbourne aka Bumpy B Breezy.

The two activities were conducted during the first assembly session for the 2014 school term. Introduced by Hon. Fahie, Ms. Donovan read one of several poems contained in her book to students. While noting that none of them could have related to the content of the poem as they were too young to relate to those events, she urged them to make reading fun and a habit.

“Always be thankful,” she also told pupils as she said the pleasantries they enjoy today are much better than those of yester years.

B Breezy, in his own style and swag, added his part which was also well received by the students. His message surrounded the importance of students pursuing their dreams and the role reading plays.

Hon Fahie said that in like manner, pupils of the Isabella Morris Primary School will be furnished with the book and also will be inspired by a motivational speaker. He also alluded to a number of initiatives that will soon be coming on stream in the district including the opening of the Homework assistance centre for students. This is schedule to take full effect in two weeks time.

Among the many teachers present to witness the commencement of the motivational sessions and the distribution of the book was the school’s Principal Mrs. Pearlette Fraser Smith who was very pleased about the initiative and assured that pupils will be encouraged to read the book in detail. And according to Hon Fahie, he would be returning for follow up sessions with the pupils who are likely to win prizes, having proven to have read and absorbed the contents of the book.

They are also likely to be quizzed on the motivational talk given by the young rapper.

The First District Motivational Sessions will continue next Monday January 13, 2014 at the Isabella Morris Primary in Carrot Bay.

WEST END, Tortola, VI – Known for being ‘trendsetters’, the First District will be coming alive with a number of initiatives, kudos to its District Representative Honourable Andrew A. Fahie and a team from his district.

Three activities will flood the community today January 6, 2014, namely the launch of its schools’ motivational sessions at the two public primary schools in the First District, distribution of books written by local icons and the handing over of a number of items to the St Vincent and the Grenadines Association (SVGA) of the Virgin Islands (VI).

The first session will be led by one of the Territory’s budding young artist Mr. Travis Osbourne aka Bumpy B Breezy, who is expected to address students and teachers of the Leonora Delville Primary School this morning in Capoons Bay.

Osbourne is a local rapper who had his first mix-tape titled ‘Wrangle Music’ released in December, 2012. He is said to be doing a number of positive things in his community hence his selection as the first motivational speaker.

The programme is the brainchild of the District Representative Hon. Fahie and is being spearheaded by a competent team from the District. Speaking with Hon Fahie in an exclusive interview yesterday January 5, 2014, he highlighted that the motivational sessions will target all youths within the District but they would begin with the Isabella Morris and Leonora Delville Primary Schools in the initial stages.

“After we get those public schools going, the Private schools also, having persons from the district, young and old and from the surrounding areas who are doing positive things, so that they can come in and speak positive words of positivity to the young people,” noted Hon Fahie.

While the first motivational session is being launched today at the Leonora Delville Primary in Capoon’s Bay, a similar launch is set for Monday January 13, 2013 at the Isabella Morris Primary in Carrot Bay.

In a further community drive in the First District, Hon Fahie said that they are seeking to promote local authors in the district and as such a book produced and published by Ms. Velma Chung will be distributed to students and teachers of both schools.

“Tomorrow (today) the first book that we would be distributing is one written by Ms Velma Chung… her book is about a lot of cultural events that took place in Carrot Bay and she will be reading some of the stories,” said Hon Fahie, “This we are doing to promote more reading by our youngsters and for them to get to see some of the local icons in the district.”

The district is also expected to hand over a quantity of items to the SVGA later today to aid their relief drive for their homeland, St. Vincent and the Grenadines that was ravaged by a Christmas Eve rain storm leaving several dead and severe damage to the island’s infrastructure.

And with the reading, let's hope the children get introduced to the importance of history in District one and around the island by looking at ruins and historic places to back up those stories about culture and events. They are the next generation and we need them to care about history.

Do you have children in the primary schools? Students are always out on field trips learning about the historical sites. You people just love to talk. They usually go to these sites to see first hand what their teachers have been talking aboutl

check your facts- my comment was just that- a reiteration that history is important. If you want to add to the discussion by saying they go on field trips, fine. But that doesn't necessarily mean they are getting the full impact and how to get involved. You are slapping my hand when we are on the same page. This is not an argument but a reminder that history is important. tone is everything.
