WEST END, Tortola, VI – Phillipe Leroy became the BVI Cycling Federation’s new National Time Trial Champion after holding off the challenge of Richard Morgan to win the 20.4-mile race in 53 minutes flat today, Sunday September 29, 2013.

Riding into a fairly stiff breeze all the way from the West End Police Station to the turnaround in Palestina meant that the National Record set by defending 2012 Champion, Orano Andrews, was never under serious threat but Leroy was pushed to a fast time by Morgan who came second in 57 minutes and Andrews who came third in 58 flat.

In the Women’s section, Kay Reddy took over Lisa Adamson’s crown with a time of 1 hour 6 minutes while Tash Ruschienski took silver in 1:23.

Overall, 7 juniors competed to make a total of 19 riders for the penultimate race on the BVICF calendar.

Antoine Brewley finished his lap of just over 10 miles in a time of 35.25 to win the Under 16 division. Deraun Noel was second in 35.54 and Wyntlee Ambrose third in 41 minutes flat.

In the Under 18’s, Ricardo Jones was victorious in 31.35 followed home by Kelechi Bolondia in second with 32.29 and Barney Knuckolds third in 34.56.

The final event of the 2013 season, the Jason Bally Memorial, takes place next weekend. The event will start with a ceremony of remembrance for the rider who lost his life a few years ago in Sea Cows Bay. There will be a dinner and then the Race itself to round off the weekend.

National Time Trial set for Sept. 29

The BVI Cycling Federation will be hosting the National Time Trial on Sunday September 29, 2013, with races in both the Men’s and Women’s category on the course, which starts in the West End area of Tortola.

According to the Federation President, Daryl Christopher Snr, the time trial will start and finish this year at the basketball court opposite the West End Police Station,

The course travels west then turns at Frenchman’s Cay Junction, travels back east and turns by Pleasant Valley Junction (Nanny Cay) back to the start to complete 1 lap or 10.4 miles for juniors, 2 laps or 20.4 miles for everyone else.

Orano Andrews is the defending Champion having won last year with a new National Speed record of 48:54.611 in winning the Elite Division. The Women’s Division was won by Lisa Adamson who at the time was making a return to road racing and took the title with some ease in a time of 27.24.285.

The Federation has also announced initial plans for its signature annual event, Jason Bally Memorial, which is scheduled for October 6, 2013.

In a change to the usual format, the BVICF is inviting all mounting bikers to participate in the Jason Bally Road Race this year. They will do 3 laps of the course and the BVICF will award prizes to the top 3 finishes in this category, both male and female. Complete race details will follow shortly.

In 2012, Andrews narrowly missed out on a double as he was unable to hold the lead and the attack of the main group until the finish. At the end of six gruesome laps, Phillippe Leroy took first place in 3:33.54.863 and became the BVICF National Champion.

Sally Blackmore became the BVICF National Champion 2012 in the female division with a winning time of 2:00.29.359.

In other cycling news, several VI based riders will be participating in the La Vuelta Puerto Tour and, according to the Mountain Bike Club’s Gareth Thomas, the event “is one of the best organized events in the Caribbean”.

“It starts on time, has plenty of well provisioned rest stops, mechanics following the tour, a police escort around Puerto Rico and it is open all levels of ability.”

Riders can register for La Vuelta in various categories including the  A Group, which is the hammer heads (25 mph minimum), the B Group which generally go about 20 mph or the  C Group which they say the average is about 15 mph.

The event is on January 24, 25 and 26, 2014 and the MTB Club is looking to charter a plane if possible to accommodate riders and their bikes.
