ROAD TOWN, Tortola VI- The U17 4 x 100m Relay Team picked up the Territory’s 5th medal on Sunday April 8, 2012, at the 41st Carifta Games in Bermuda with a blistering 48.22 second run.

Jonel Lacey led off, handed to Lakiesha Warner who ran like the wind before handing over to Taylor Hill and then Huggins came roaring down the home straight narrowly failing to catch the Bahamians and Jamaicans, but easily holding off Guadeloupe to take the Bronze.

The Medal took the BVI count to 5, which is the best return yet from a Carifta Games and put the team into 4th place overall.

Following on from the Silver won by Trevia Gumbs in the Shot Put, Lakeisha Warner finished 3rd in the U17 800m with her time of 2:18.28. Jamaica added to their medal haul with Tiffany James taking gold in a time of 2:18.11 and her team-mate, Chantai Smith claimed silver.

Huggins will be looking for her third Medal of the Games in today’s, April 9, 2012, 200 metres, also competing are Shiann Vandenberg, Shacoy Stephens and Jamaal Alexander, who all feature in the 200’s.

Also today, Brandon Andrews will look to reach a medal position in the Heptathlon. Currently he sits 5th on 2560 points.

The Team is scheduled to arrive back in the Territory on Tuesday evening April 10, with some arriving by Ferry from St Thomas and the rest at the Terrence E Lettsome Airport.

Although details are not yet finalized, a celebration is being planned for Wednesday.

Gold Medal for Gumbs

Meanwhile, Tynelle Gumbs won the U17 Girls Javelin Gold on Saturday April 7, 2012, with a Carifta and National Record of 41.46m.

It was the first Gold won by the BVI in the event. On April 8, 2012, Trevia Gumbs won Silver in the Girls Under 17 Shot Put.

In the 100m Girls Under 17 final on Saturday, Nelda Huggins won silver medal when she finished second in a time of 11.76. Taylor Hill finished 5th with a time of 12.10. Huggins was first out of the blocks, but, as expected, Jamaica’s Shauna Helps proved too strong in the middle and with her customary blazing finish took the 100 Gold with her winning time of 11.66.

Shaian Vandenburg was seventh in the U20 Girls 100m in 12.30 seconds.

Tarika Moses who ran a PB in the 400m with her advancing time of 55.62 and second place finish in her Heat, was unable to compete in her Final after the injury that she sustained in her last meet before heading out to the Carifta’s came back to haunt her.

Shacoy Stephens and Tarique Moses found their other competitors too hot to handle in their 400m Heat as both ran non-advancing times of 53.21 and 53.88 respectively.

The athletes had to endure cool conditions all day with strong winds and rain in the morning session and temperatures that were expected to fall as low as 60 degrees late in the evening session.

In this Cleave Farrington photoslide, it captures the events of Day 1 and Day 2 of the Carifta Games.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL BVI ATHLETES!! Reporter I do not appreciate your "as expected" comment!!! What sort of National Pride reporting is that... come on you could have worded your story better 11

Congrats to our BVI athletes. We are so proud of you guys. Keep giving it your best and bring us back some more medals. On another note note, the reporter was just doing their job. If you follow track and field you will know that the young lady normally runs like that with a late push in her sprint events. I'm sure the reporter was in no way being bias or insinuating anything. Stop trying to find negative in everything for once!

Do NOT make this a political thing. The athletes, their coaches, their parents and supporters are what brought them to this point. Andrew NOR VIP is there while they are practicing 5 in the morning and after school, they aren't there to their events, so GIVE IT A REST!!

Stop talking nonsense! NDP built the new track so that our kids can train properly not on grass like horses. NDP also created the Youth Affairs and Sports to put more focus on the youth and their athletics needs. KEep the politics aside, the kids did well, congrats guys!!!
