- Former LIME Regional Finance Director is expected to replace Acting Commissioner of Inland Revenue Orris Thomas

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI -Word just reaching our news room from our sources within the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) Government is that Virgin Islander, Mrs. Karen B. Smith-Aaron is expected to be appointed Commissioner of the Government’s Inland Revenue Department.

Mrs. Smith-Aaron is expected to take the helm in the coming weeks according to the same NDP source and has the blessings of both the Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, whose portfolio includes the Inland Revenue Department along with the Financial Secretary Neil M. Smith.

Currently, Mr. Orris Thomas is the Acting Commissioner of Inland Revenue, the Government’s tax collection department.

Following the 2011 General Elections that saw the NDP regime securing power, the former Commissioner of Inland Revenue Sylvia C. Moses was removed from her post and now has been named the Executive Director of the International Affairs Secretarial located in the Premier’s Office.

The same NDP source told our news site that Mrs. Smith-Aaron was also a runner up for the post of Accountant General.

Karen Smith-Aaron

It was last year that this news site was the first to break the accurate news that LIME, the Telecommunications Giant, had made Mrs. Smith-Aaron position as the Regional Finance Director redundant.

Mrs. Smith-Aaron, the daughter of social activist, professional Architect, former civil servant and businessman Ira Smith of MacNamara, Road Town, is also involved in the community where she was reelected to her second one-year term as President of the Virgin Islands Horse Owners’ Association, the second women to hold the post.

It was over the weekend of January 19, 2014 that sadness and tragedy struck her family when her 21-year old son Malik J. Aaron was killed following a scooter accident at Beef Island.

The Commissioner of Inland Revenue post is a government job with a salary range of between $62,900-$92,150 in the government scale of 17.

The Staff, Management, and Board of Directors of Virgin Islands News Online offer her sincere condolences on the passing of her son and congratulate Mrs. Smith-Aaron on her new post with the Government of the Virgin Islands.

When was this job advertised? Why not promote from within, who is going to train her not the guys you passed over..I see tension within the department and NDP to blame.

For your information, Ms. Aaron would need very little training, she is very adept, and personally, I see her as becoming bored very soon after she has aced her tasks/duties.

I will continue to pray for you Mr. & Mrs. Enos and Karen Aaron and Smith family. Though you will never get over the tragic death of your son/grandson, just know that God cares and he will take you through this time of grief. He is a very present help in trouble. He will even help you to 'glory in tribulation', which simply means - though you are sorrowful about the unforeseen demise of Malik, in due time God in his matchless love, will enable you to see Him as one who is touched with the feeling of our infirmity, one who can and will strengthen you as each day passes, one who will raise you up above the insensitive words and judgements of the nay-sayers (who are not of God, but represent Satan and his workers), and comfort you as no one can, and very shortly, will help you to see that in all things: He is good, and He alone is worthy of our praise. Be assured that God is with you, will be with you, and will never leave you nor forsake you. He is not responsible for death or suffering since he clearly states in His word: "I wish above all things that you prosper and be in good health as your soul prospers", but the enemy "has desired to sift us like wheat" but again Jesus exhorts us "Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world". Can you/we? Yes: "We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us".

All the best on your journey ahead. It won't be easy celebrating your appointment, while at the same time mourning the loss of your son. However, God helps us triumph amidst the storm. I'm sure your son would be proud of your appointment and would want you to be happy. So in all things give GOD Praise!!! Be Blessed!

They took for ever to issue an acting appointment to the Acting Comm. Now they body slammed him with no regard for his twenty five years of service. The Immigration Department is in the same mess. Officers are being treated like dirt with no one to turn to. Fortunately the JUST ONE neither slumbers or sleeps.

It was just last year that I had the pleasure of meeting Karen's extended family. While Enjoying revisting the islands after 20 years from the states, Malik drove me by car to start all my excursions of the day. All my family blessings to the Smith and Arron family, may he rest in peace. Laws need to be changed on the islands.

I understand that she is meticulous and has very high standards. I have also heard that she expects those that work under her to bring those same attributes to the job. Further, she expects professionals to bring a certain level of skill to the job and not have to be taught, on the job, the fundamentals of a subject in which that person holds a degree. It sometimes not easy to work with such a person.
