UPDATE: Karen B. Smith-Aaron on the job @ IR
Mrs. Smith-Aaron started her new role as Commissioner of Inland Revenue on Monday February 3, 2014. She replaces Mr. Orris Thomas who was acting in the post as the Chief of the Government's tax collection agency.
Following the 2011 General Elections that saw the National Democratic Party (NDP) regime securing power, the former Commissioner of Inland Revenue Sylvia C. Moses was removed from her post and has now been named Executive Director of the International Affairs Secretariat located in the Premier’s Office.
Tragedy struck Mrs. Smith-Aaron's family on January 19, 2014 when her son Malik J. Aaron lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Beef Island. He was buried on February 1, 2014 after a funeral service attended by hundreds at the Road Town Methodist Church.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI -Word just reaching our news room from our sources within the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) Government is that Virgin Islander, Mrs. Karen B. Smith-Aaron is expected to be appointed Commissioner of the Government’s Inland Revenue Department.
Mrs. Smith-Aaron is expected to take the helm in the coming weeks according to the same NDP source and has the blessings of both the Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, whose portfolio includes the Inland Revenue Department along with the Financial Secretary Neil M. Smith.
Currently, Mr. Orris Thomas is the Acting Commissioner of Inland Revenue, the Government’s tax collection department.

The same NDP source told our news site that Mrs. Smith-Aaron was also a runner up for the post of Accountant General.

It was last year that this news site was the first to break the accurate news that LIME, the Telecommunications Giant, had made Mrs. Smith-Aaron position as the Regional Finance Director redundant.
Mrs. Smith-Aaron, the daughter of social activist, professional Architect, former civil servant and businessman Ira Smith of MacNamara, Road Town, is also involved in the community where she was reelected to her second one-year term as President of the Virgin Islands Horse Owners’ Association, the second women to hold the post.
It was over the weekend of January 19, 2014 that sadness and tragedy struck her family when her 21-year old son Malik J. Aaron was killed following a scooter accident at Beef Island.
The Commissioner of Inland Revenue post is a government job with a salary range of between $62,900-$92,150 in the government scale of 17.
