Croal wins his heat!

Croal, who narrowly missed out on qualification in the 100m on July 28, 2026, won his 200m Heat in 20.53s to comfortably secure a slot in tomorrow's semi-finals.

"I just wanted to execute better than in the 100 [metres], and I think I did a pretty good job. I just wanted to get a Q to run again tomorrow," Croal said after the race. 

Croal said he hopes to improve on his time in the semi-finals.

Defreitas books 200m semifinal berth after solid 100m outing

Running in cold, rainy conditions in Glasgow, Defreitas won her women’s 200m heat in 23.25 seconds to reach the semifinal round. Her time ranks her seventh-fastest among the 17 athletes who have so far qualified for the next stage out of a 35-strong field. 

Earlier in the meet, Defreitas made her Commonwealth Games 100m debut, finishing third in her semifinal heat in 11.28 seconds and placing 11th overall out of 23 semifinalists. After the race, she said: “It was a pretty good race. I felt I executed to the best of my ability. I am proud. It may not have been the result that I wanted, but now it’s time to move on to the 200.” 

Defreitas is scheduled to return to Scotstoun Stadium for the 200m Round 1 tomorrow, running in Heat 1, Lane 8 at 5:30 a.m. VI time (10:30 a.m. Glasgow time). 

Meanwhile, Wanyae Belle and Adriano Gumbs missed out on semi-final spots in their 200m events. 

Gumbs throws 18.45m to reach shot put final

In the field events, Djimon L. Gumbs delivered when it mattered, recording a qualifying mark of 18.45 metres in Group A of the men’s shot put qualification. The distance placed him fifth in his flight and secured his place in the shot put final later in the competition. Gumbs competed as athlete No. 5 in Group A, with his qualification round beginning at 6:05 a.m. BVI time (11:05 a.m. Glasgow).

His progression adds to Team VI’s momentum on day six of the Games, following the sprinters’ advances and underscoring the territory’s growing presence in both track and field disciplines at Glasgow 2026.

Meanwhile, Jaleel N. J.Croal and Rikkoi A.R. Brathwaite of the Virgin Islands ran strong races in the opening round of the Men’s 100 metres at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games but fell just short of advancing to the semifinals.

Facing a tough field of 73 athletes competing for 17 spots in the 100m semi-finals, Croal posted a season-best-challenging 10.29 seconds in Heat 8 but finished 18th overall, one place shy of qualification. Brathwaite, running in Heat 9, clocked 10.37 seconds to place 23rd among the 73 starters and also missed advancing.

Croal will return to action in Glasgow on Wednesday, July 29, when he contests the Men’s 200m Round 1. Brathwaite will travel to the Dominican Republic to represent the Virgin Islands in the Men’s 100m at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Santo Domingo on August 3.
