ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The 14-year-old teenager, who was critically injured in a scooter accident of June 4, 2012 and had to be flown to Jamaica for treatment, has returned home and is doing very well.

In an exclusive interview with his father Shane Winter, he gave thanks to God for his son’s recovery which went from being critical to almost full recovery.

Mr. Winter thanked all those who have been there for him and his family during the time of his son’s tragedy and also took special time out to thank the Muslim community.

According to Mr. Winter who has since converted to Islam, he said while his son was in Jamaica June 4, 2012 for over a month, the Virgin Islands muslim community liaised with members in Jamaica and his son was visited by several specialists doctors during his hospitalization to ensure everything was ok with him.

The incident took place around 2:30 a.m. on Monday June 4, 2012 when the young man was the lone rider on a scooter that he allegedly was given by a friend to take a ride. He was said to also be wearing a helmet at the time of the incident which may not have been properly strapped on.

The accident occurred in Slaney, on the corner from Dolphin Discovery where the rider was apparently heading in a westerly direction when he apparently lost control and hit a guard rail.

He was taken to Peebles Hospital and subsequently flown to Jamaica the same evening for further medical treatment during which time he was in a critical condition.

It's only to be expected since they continue to ride up and down recklessly, often without helmets and often at high speeds. They were at it all this weekend and I suppose they will be at it tonight too. They don't learn and there's nobody to make them stop so they will forever be in accidents!

its unfortunate that this had to happen, however i'm hoping these young people and the police see what is going on. Lastnight and tonight there are many scooter rider on the road riding without any lights on. I'm not saying that this was the cause of the accident, all i'm saying is that these rider need to take their lives more serious and see the important of putting on lights while riding or else there will be more accidents. Hopefully not serious. Also the police needs to do their job also and lock them up when they see them out at night riding aroound with no lights on

I am not surprise. These young riders not only endager their own lives but they also endanger the lives of motor vehicle drivers as well as pedestrians. Parents need to be very careful when buying or allowing these youngsters to get these bikes. It is time to institute a ban on these motor bikes because it is clear that they cannot be controlled by the police.

The story says the kid is in his early teens. What was he doing on the road on a scooter and at that time of the morning? It is time this nonsense is stopped once and for all, parents need to be issued huge fines and even imprisonment for their dereliction of duty to protect their children. Any scooter rider who breaks the law needs to be fined heavily and the police need to step up their game and get them off the road before an innocent person is killed.

If persons are not willing to PARENT their children then they should refrain from having them. Parenting a child is learning to say NO! It is against the law for a 14 year old to be driving a scooter. It should also be against the law for a 14 year old to be out unsupervised by an adult at 2:30am. If this youngster snuck out of the house and stole the scooter then perhaps I'd feel sorrow for the parents, but all reports indicate they allowed their young son to have the scooter and be out in the wee morning hours. That is awful parenting and if the young boy does not recover I hope his parents suffer in guilt for they are the reason their boy was in the accident. They hold all responsibility. They should be ashamed of themselves. For all persons who will comment in the negative towards my uncaring attitude for the family, you should be angry at the parents and not me. For the young boy, my prayers are out a hundred fold. Someone needs to care for him. I also pray that any parent considering purchasing a scooter for their young child and allowing them to ride illegally without proper driving lessons, licensing and insurance, I pray that you reconsider and wait until they are old enough to learn the rules of the road and be more mature to respect the rules of the road. I also pray that the government pass legislation requiring all persons pass a proper scooter driving school and exam prior to being licenced and that HUGE fines be given to the parents that allow their children to drive unlicenced and uninsured scooters. Laws are made to protect and no one should be above the law. Parents that allow their childrend to ride a scooter below the legal driving age and without the proper papers are teaching their children that they can break the laws. This is nonsense and it is time a few people have their senses knocked back into them.

I have two kids of my own - I teach them right from wrong, responsibility and respect for others. Clearly this is not the same with most parents!!!!!!!!!!

how about he shouldnt have been on the road period - a young teen means he has no licence, no insurance and should have been home in his bed. These parents have only themselves to blame.

I don't think any parent would consciously have their children out that late. I agree with the first two questions though. Do you think any parent wants to set bad example for their children. I don't care how poor, how well off, etc they are, we always want the best. I believe we are a trusting, and that comes from way back, and that is how we need to be, and maybe that's what's being taken advantage off. We trust them so much, and want them to know that we love and trust you to do the right thing, because this is how I raised you, or am raising you, that we let go piece by piece too quick. With what is happening, what's showing on tv and all the other interests, we releasing them too quick. I would love to see what would happen when all parents tighten up. TIGHTEN UP PARENTS, TIGHTEN UP. Trust as far as your eyesight.

Stop telling lies. they never reported that the bike was stolen. They reported that the Police were investigating whether it was stolen. Also, they never said WHO was suspected of stealing it even if it was stolen. You all like so much confusion at Attitude Adjustment is right in his/her post. I'm just glad the young man appears as though he will pull through. With all the fam is going through this is the .... you all carrying on with?

Your very naïve when it comes to the law. You cannot sue the news for reporting that the police were investigating whether the scooter was stolen!!! Also, it was probably the parents that told the police their son didn't own a scooter and that is probably why the police were investigating the ownership of the scooter he was riding!

Is he going to be charged now with riding without a licence and insurance? Is the person that willingly allowed him to ride on the illegally going to be charged? Are hte parents going to be visited by Social Development to find out why they are allowing their children out at all times of the night? Lets hope this is dealt with efficiently and in a way that sends out a message to other idiots
