UPDATE: Horse races cancelled at Ellis Thomas Downs this Sunday

In fact there will be no races at Ellis Thomas Downs on Sunday since the entire race card has been cancelled.
This was disclosed on September 24, 2012 by President of the VI Horse Owners' Association, Mr Lesmore Smith. “As a result of a meeting with horse owners, which just concluded, the race will be cancelled. I have nothing else to say but to apologise to the public.”
Meeting on way forward
Mr. Smith did say, however, that a meeting will be held with local horse owners tomorrow September 25, 2012 at Ellis Thomas Downs from 5pm to discuss the way forward for the sport.
It is anyone’s guess what has forced the cancellation of the card but Mr. Smith had expressed optimism that there would be enough support from horse owners for an exciting and competitive race day despite the shortage of horses here as well as in St. Thomas and St. Croix.
Slevin pulls out
But even before Virgin Islands News Online was informed of the cancellation, it was known by this news site that Slevin would not have been coming.
Mr. Smith had said Slevin’s owner had confirmed via word of mouth that his horse would have featured on Sunday. However, Slevin’s owner James Bates, when contacted by this news site, had said he was no longer coming to Tortola. He also refused to comment further.
Disappointment
The cancellation of the race card squashed all hopes of a showdown between the “Big Demon” Slevin and Tortola’s Good Prospecting in the feature race. Good Prospecting is still prancing over his victory in the feature race at the Clinton E. Phipps Racetrack, in St. Thomas USVI on September 9, 2012.
Good Prospecting’s owner, who also happens to be Mr. Smith, had said his horse was the only horse within Tortola and St Thomas that could be able to take on the great champion horse Slevin and Gato Paso out of St Croix in the A Class Category.
