UPDATE: Hon. O'Neal- Hon. Fahie 'didn't say all' regarding VIP leadership!
Honourable Fahie, during a District meeting in Capoons Bay on Saturday January 26, 2013 had sought to dispel allegations that there is serious infighting in the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) and that he has his eyes on elevating to the helm of the party’s leadership. He revealed that Hon. O'Neal, the Virgin Islands Party Chairman and Leader of the Opposition, had indicated that he was only going to serve in the opposition for 18 months.
When asked if he had any knowledge about Hon. Fahie's claim that he was only serving as Opposition Leader for eighteen months, Hon. O'Neal responded, "I didn't read it, if that's what he said he didn't say all that I had said."
Asked what it was in full that he had said at the time, Hon. O'Neal responded, "I don't think that matters to you [Virgin Islands News Online] now."
At the time Hon. Fahie was delivering his report to the people of the First District and by extension the Territory. He had said, "Since the last General Elections, our Leader has already informed that he wishes to serve as Leader of the Opposition for eighteen months. He did not indicate whether or not he would be giving up his post as Chairman of the VIP," Hon. Fahie reported.
Efforts to gather further clarification from Hon. Fahie proved futile.

Hon. Fahie dispels rumours of wanting VIP leadership!
- Dismisses notion as false rumours; says VIP does have issues
“Do we have issues? YES! Can the issues be solved? Yes! I am not worried about the future of the Virgin Islands Party. The future is bright! The VIP is the only political party in the British Virgin Islands that has a working constitution that was tried, tested and proven many times.”
This was an emphatic statement by First District representative Honourable Andrew A. Fahie as he sought to dispel allegations that there is serious infighting in the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) and that he has his eyes on elevating to the helm of the party’s leadership. He noted he is more concerned about being able to represent the people, both who would have and have not elected him as their leader in the First District.
This statement comes on the heels of talks that it is time the long serving leader of the VIP Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal OBE give up the position mainly because of his age and physical self mobility. In an attempt to clear his name, Hon. Fahie made it clear to the listening ears and the recorders with their red lights on, “All the false rumors out there stating that Fahie wants to declare himself Chairman and Leader of the Party is just what it is, false.”
Hon. Fahie further stated, “Is your First District representative without ambitions? NO! I do not run away from anything; but the decision for leadership of the Virgin Islands Party is that of the Congress; that of the Constitution; and that of you the people!”
He said that since the last General Elections, Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal indicated that he wished to serve as Leader of the Opposition for eighteen months and that he did not indicate whether or not he would be giving up his post as Chairman of the VIP.
“If this were to happen, then the Party’s Congress must prepare itself to perform its Constitutional duty in convening its 76 member delegates and commence the process of choosing a new leader. This is not the will of any single member. It has to be done as directed by the Party’s Constitution. There is a process that is directed by the Party’s Constitution. This is why I will continue to say that the Party has a bright future because its Constitution, once followed, will ensure such,” said Hon. Fahie.
The Opposition Member stressed that his job is to continue to represent the people of the First District with distinction. “My power comes from God through you the people of the First District so I do not need to fight for what you have already given to me. So let the naysayers have their say because the Party’s Constitution will settle it all. But no matter the outcome your representative and you the people of the First District will continue to stand tall. We have a country to build and that will remain my focus not matter what side of the isle in the House of Assembly I sit. The challenges ahead that this Territory must face cannot be solved through mischief, fancy slogans and marketing,” said Hon. Fahie.
In unveiling some of his plans for the First District, Hon. Fahie said that, through the churches and as a united First District community, every effort will be directed towards retooling the community.
“We will launch a programme in the First District with or without government funding that will ensure that every person especially our young men in the District who do not have a skill will be trained in one, whether it is in plumbing, engine repair, woodwork, speech presentation, and the list goes on. It is not my intention to compete with the already stellar programmes that Government after Government continues to provide, rather it is my intention to complete rather than compete. Since some of our young people in the First District do not go to these programmes, we will bring these programmes to them,” Hon Fahie told members of his district.
