UPDATE: Hon. Maduro-Caines out of hospital
The first term Member of Parliament is said to be home recovering and is expected to be up and about in the coming weeks.
The nature of her medical surgery has not been released to the public, but persons close to the situation told this news site that the Sixth District Representative remains in good spirits and is expected to experience a full and stable recovery.
Mrs. Maduro-Caines has been home receiving many telephone calls from her constituents, family and friends.
Hon. Maduro-Caines, a former Assistant Postmaster General in the Virgin Islands (VI) Postal Service, convincingly defeated former long time Sixth District Representative Omar W. Hodge in the 2011 VI general elections. Hodge, a former Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, served in the VI Parliament for 32 years (1979-2011).
Maduro-Caines, who ran with the now ruling National Democratic Party team, received 612 or 61.4 % of the votes in compelling fashion to Hodge’s 385 or 38.6 % of votes cast, the biggest up-set of last year’s general elections.
Since taking office last year, the new representative has taken a keen interest in the youths in her community and remains very involved in some aspects of the festival committee activities. Maduro-Caines is also spearheading efforts in developing an after-school programme and basketball tournaments as well as the upgrading of the Purcell Estate basketball court.
In recent months, the man that Hon. Maduro-Caines defeated in a landslide victory, former Legislator Hodge, also underwent surgery at a Florida Hospital and is said to be back in the Virgin Islands and recovering very well.
In addition, former Premier and now Leader of the Opposition Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal OBE, was in a Florida hospital for medical attention and is also back in the VI and has been up and about and back on the job.
The Staff, Management and Board of Directors of Virgin Islands News Online wish Hon. Alvera Maduro-Caines a speedy recovery and God’s blessings.
