BUDAPEST, Hungary- Teenage sprint sensation Adaejah T. Hodge of the [British] Virgin Islands has bowed out of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest after placing 7th in the semi-finals of the Women’s 200m today, August 24, 2023.

The 17-year-old, in her first appearance at these championships, clocked 22.96, way below her Personal Best of 22.33.

The Virgin Islander, who holds the U18 and U20 World Records in the 200m, had secured a spot in the semis as a non-automatic qualifier for her 22.82 run in the Heats.

Hodge was also unfortunate to be shown a yellow card before the start of the race. It is unclear what exactly was the reason and if it may have played on her nerves.

The race was eventually won by Julien Alfred of St Lucia in a time of 22.17. Second was Daryl Nieta of Great Britain who clocked a Personal Best of 22.21.

Anthonique Strachan of the Bahamas was third and her time of 22.30 was just enough to see her into the final as a non-automatic qualifier.

Jamaica’s Sherica Jackson and USA’s Gabby Thomas have advanced to the final as the favourites. The 100m gold medallist Sha’Carri Richardson of the USA is also in the final.

[British] Virgin Islands’ teenage sprint phenom Adaejah T. Hodge will be in action today, August 24, 2023, as she competes in the Women's 200m Semi-finals of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

The 17-year-old qualified for the 200m semi-finals on her debut at the World Championships on August 23, 2023.

She had placed fourth in her Heat in a time of 22.82 seconds, which allowed her to advance as one of the 6 non-automatic qualifiers.

Hodge in action @ 1:45 PM

Hodge will run in Heat 2 out of Lane 1 at 1:45 PM (VI time).

Among those in that Heat will be St Lucia’s Julien Alfred, Bahamas’ Antonique Strachan and USA’s Kayla White.

Automatic qualification requirements to the finals require athletes to finish within the two top positions per Heat or finishing within the two next fastest non-automatic times.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has commended Hodge for reaching the semi-finals and opined that Hodge will one day become the fastest woman in the world.

“We wish her well and we know that she will make us all proud,” Premier Wheatley stated at a press conference moments ago, August 24, 2023.

She was there because she made the qualifying times. There are hardly any teenagers performing at that level. The next few years will be fun to watch her fully arrive on the global stage,

Keep the faith. You have youth on your side and as long God is with you, you also have time.
So that means your time will come.
Experience is that greatest teacher. Sure that you will get too. Just believe.

The young lady has done well at the international level. I am proud of her. She has written her name in the International Athletic Federation list of athletes and that is a tremendous achievement. When the history of the Virgin Islands is written the name Adejah Hodge will be recorded as an athlete who represented the Territory at the World Championship 2023. These small-minded bloggers must try to encourage everyone to develop the Territory rather than negative comments.

I was once a athlete and age has nothing to do with her wining or losing. You did your best and just keep working harder on your legs and arms to strengthen them more and change your diet.
