ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The National Emergency Operations Center is advising the BVI community that the Governor has consulted with the Director of Disaster Management and is satisfied that the immediate threat is over and has issued the official all clear.

The National Emergency Operations Center is advising the BVI community that the Governor has consulted with the Director of Disaster Management and is satisfied that the immediate threat is over and has issued the official all clear.

However, as a result of squall-like conditions and rain bands which continue to rotate throughout the area, the Antigua Meteorological Office has continued the Tropical Storm Warning for the Virgin Islands until further notice.

The Governor has indicated that all government offices will be open for business today; therefore, all government officers are expected to report to work.

Power is still on throughout the Territory; however for your safety avoid downed or dangling utility wires and report any faults to the BVIEC. The water and Sewerage Department has indicated that public water supply has been restored.

All sea ports are open throughout the Territory for commercial vessels but for Ferry services, the public is asked to contact the individual Ferry providers. The Terrence B. International Airport is open for business.

Residents are asked to be careful while driving on the road in the squall-like conditions, especially along coastal areas. Sea conditions have deteriorated; therefore small crafts are cautioned to remain at port. All other vessels should exercise extreme caution.

Previously, in a press conference held yesterday August 22, 2012 at the Department of Disaster Management Conference Room and directed by the Premier and Governor of the Virgin Islands, Premier Honourable Dr D. Orlando Smith pointed out some effective tips, that Virgin Islanders and residents can take to assist in their own safety.

He encouraged residents to “put together a disaster supplies kit and know the emergency shelters nearest to your home.  Stock up on drinking water and canned goods. Clear up your yards by removing all garbage and unsecured items to prevent the scattering of debris during high winds. Prepare an emergency travel bag and secure your valuable documents.”

Premier Smith advised the general public to “be aware, be prepared and be alert.”

He stated that everyone should be mindful of their surroundings, their communities and their families, and added that they tune into local radio stations and continue to monitor the weather online to ensure they are “in the know”.

Governor of the Virgin Islands, Boyd McCleary, had said as a safety precaution, residents living in low lying and flood prone areas, should be prepared to move to higher grounds.

He also said that residents near slopes should guard themselves against possible mudslides.

I agree as tonight the conditions are worse than yesterday. The Governor rushed his announcement of all-clear. He could have simply called for all essential workers to report but non-essentials to wait until further notice....not sure what was the rush!!!
