FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI – Eldra Violet Smith's funeral service was today, September 16, 2012, held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Fat Hogs Bay, East End in the presence of family, friends, dignitaries and numerous mourners who came from far and wide to pay their last respects.

She was later interred at the Smith's family burial ground in West End.

Smith, the mother of Premier the Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith, was 94 years of age at the time of her passing on the evening of September 6, 2012.

While delivering the eulogy, her son, Dr Smith described her greatest passion as being her love for Jesus and her commitment to Adventism.

In a ceremony that saw numerous glowing tributes being extended, both written and spoken, Mrs Smith affectionately known as Ms Eldra an Sister Eldra, was beautifully sent off in song and scripture.

Ms Eldra was portrayed among other things as having a romance with her faith by Pastor Howard Simon.

Mrs Smith was also pictured by her son as very devoted to her family through the time spent and care taken with them in displays of affection and appreciation.

The hard working Mrs Smith was said to be right there with her husband, popularly known as Brother Josh, doing everything necessary to provide for her household; riding on horseback to tend cattle and opening a small grocery store in the heart of Road Town as they started a bakery.

Pastor Howard Simon delivered a heartfelt sermon titled “What to do when a wonderful woman dies.” Simon explained that in instances such as these it is appropriate to seek a release “so that we would not be knocked flat off of our feet...”

Death, he said, can fill you up, with sorrow, with loneliness and with grief therefore it was the only wise thing to do.

Mrs. Eldra Davies-Smith passed away at her home in Lower Estate, Road Town at around 4:45 pm September 6, 2012. She died peacefully surrounded by family and friends.

She was married to the late Joshua Smith sr., and she was the mother of the late Joshua “Joey” Smith one of the pioneers of the Social Security Scheme. Her late son has a building named in his honor.

Mrs. Eldra Davies-Smith, the great grandmother, grandmother, mother, sister and aunt came from a prominent indigenous family, the Davies which hails from the eastern side of Tortola.

She was a longtime Seventh-day Adventist and highly respected in the community. A few weeks ago her son, the VI’s Leader Dr. Smith hosted a birthday party in her honour to celebrate her 94th birthday.

Immediately on the learning of her passing, a large crowd of family and friends gathered at her home in Lower Estate.

The Staff, Management and Board of Directors of Virgin Islands News Online offer our sincere condolences to her entire family.
