UPDATE: Dr Archibald was a ‘true patriot’ – Premier Smith
Dr Archibald, who died on April 3, 2014 at the age of 80 years, is survived by his wife Deputy Governor V. Inez Archibald, three daughters and five grandchildren.
While he is remembered by many as a brilliant advocate with a razor-sharp and analytical mind his wife, in her tribute said Dr Archibald was much more than this however. More importantly, he was also remembered as her ‘honey’.
Daughter, I. Patricia Archibald-Bowers praised her father for his belief in her as she outlined many of his memorable sayings that stuck with her.
Meanwhile, Governor William B. McCleary said Dr Archibald was a figure of regional significance and his contribution went far beyond the law which he practiced. Further, he stated that Archibald’s passing leaves a huge legacy and an enormous void.
Premier Dr The Hon. D. Orlando Smith said the breadth of Dr Archibald’s Practice was truly unprecedented but recalled that he was also a humble and ordinary man who he felt was a true patriot.
Tributes during the service came from Deputy Premier and Minister for Labour and Natural Resources, Dr The Hon. Kedrick D. Pickering, Prime Minister of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis The Right Hon. Dr Denzil L. Douglas, Sydney Bennet, QC and The Reverend Dr Wycherley Gumbs.
His remains have been interred at the Methodist Cemetery in Road Town.

‘Archie’ a ‘Giant’ in the legal profession – Many attest
PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI – Earlier today April 25, 2014 as the High Court of Justice convened a special sitting to pay tribute to the late Dr. Joseph S. Archibald, QC, the word ‘Giant’ was ever so often said as many in the legal profession rose to speak.
The prominent Attorney Joseph S. Archibald, QC who founded the law firm of J. S. Archibald and Co. passed away on April 3, 2013 at his home in McNamara, located in Road Town, on the Main Island of Tortola.
The special sitting was presided over by High Court Judge Vikki Ann-Ellis as it was being held before a relatively sizable audience in the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in Paraquita Bay, Tortola.
The sitting was attended extensively by members of legal bodies from across the wide spans of the Caribbean Region including those of the OECS. Attorney General of the Virgin Islands Dr. the Honourable Christopher P. Malcolm was the first to be afforded an opportunity to give tribute which he did in his usual very brief but punching style.
“The measure of a man in this way is something that is not easily achieved because it requires that you build a solid reputation… and that at the very end when others are looking on, they can be referenced to your accomplishments. Regardless of how you see yourself make a determination that all that is required to be said of you is a single name and all others would understand,” stated Hon Malcolm.
According to Hon Malcolm, Dr Archibald could be said in many respects to be someone larger than life.
The first person to have acknowledged the late legal luminary was Member of the Virgin Islands’ Inner Bar Mr Gerard St. C. Farara QC who was also followed by his colleague Ms R. Dancia Penn, QC.
“Archie as he is known to most of us, including the so called ‘common’ people…. we love to call him by that name, a man of somewhat diminutive stature was really a giant in the legal profession not just in the BVI but throughout the OECS where he also practiced and also in the wider Caribbean where he is quite well known,” stated Mr Farara.
Memories of the late Dr Archibald alluded to by others who gave tributes today included ‘the man with the little black book’, ‘A lover of cricket’, ‘he really loved to dance and would always tell you with whom’ just to name a few.
Dr Archibald will be laid to rest tomorrow April 26, 2014 with full rites.
