ROSEAU, Dominica- The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) led by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skeritt has won the December 6, 2022, general election in the Commonwealth of Dominica.

According to the Electoral Office of Dominica, the DLP won at the polls 19-2.

Jesma Paul won the Salisbury Constituency, while Anthony S Charles won the Marigot Constituency as independent candidates.

The snap election was boycotted by the main opposition party and its supporters.

Twenty-one of 32 seats in the House of Assembly were up for grabs in Tuesday’s voting, with several automatically going to Skerrit’s Dominica Labor Party since the opposition parties did not submit candidates.

The remaining nine members are chosen by the assembly or the president and two other members are ex-officio, held by the speaker and attorney general.

PM Skeritt to meet with successful independent candidates

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Skerrit has congratulated the two independent candidates who were successful at the polls, saying he plans to meet with them to chart a way forward for the country.

He stated that he wants to hear from them their visions for their constituencies and what the government can do to support them.

Skerrit said he plans to meet with all candidates who contested the election to see how they can participate in the “national reset that we have spoken about.”

“And of course, I will meet with the leader of the United Workers Party to discuss with him some of his views where the country is concerned,” he said.

‘No political axes to grind’- PM Skeritt

He said he has no political axes to grind.

“Certainly somebody who has won five straight terms cannot have have any political axes to grind, so I am really hoping that we can change the atmosphere in the country where the political discussion is concerned,” he said.

He also promised Dominicans “increasingly broad-based engagement” but warned that “people must come with clean hands and they must not come with ulterior motives.”

“They must come to the table with a genuine desire to advancing the national efforts towards our prosperity, our peace and our progress and we look forward to engaging all stakeholders,” he said on the state-owned DBS Radio on December 6, 2022.

This is the problem with Opposition. You cannot be scrambling when an election is called. You always have to be visible and ready. A sitting govt always stand a good chance of being reelected if you call a snap election. It is the fault of the opposition if they are caught with their pants down. Read between the lines. Get organized early and stay on top of your campaign. Do house to house from early. Be visible in the community year round.

Skeritt full of tricks.. Why would he call an election 2 yrs before the due date ...That's why I love Dr. Drew in St. Kitts who believe and pushing for two term limit for Prime Minister. After being in power for too long you can adopt an ownership mentality and think you are untouchable.. That's is Skiritt and Gonzalves..

2.5 years remaining on 5 year time and controlling 18 of 21 seats in Parliament a snap election called. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The snap election was a gross abuse of power and gaping weakness in the Westminister system of government. Does not Dominica have more serious issues than PM Skeritt playing political games? YES! Dominica is one of the poorest and least developed country in the region. It is fighting Haiti for being the poorest country in the region. It has poor infrastructure development, its biggest economy is government services ( government is the largest employer), agriculture, its best economic prospect is poorly developed, high unemployment rate, low per capita income, low standard of living and quality of life, poor healthcare, heavily dependent on remittances, selling passports as a source of income, high poverty rate, high import duty, large dependency and handout programme, lowest minimum wage in the region, high import of goods and low export., etc. Dominica is a nation of hand to mouth beggars. And if Columbus were to stumble back into the region looking for India, the only country he would recognize is Dominica? Dominica has not progress much since 1493, has it? Is this progress that Dominicans are proud of? Corruption running rampant.
