UPDATE - DDP Hinds still on the job, contract extended!

- Number of applicants “quite small”

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – With the selection of a new Director for Public Prosecution (DPP) at an advanced stage, the contract for the outgoing DPP Elizabeth Hinds has been extended by two months to facilitate a smooth transition, this news agency has been informed.

Mrs. Hinds’ contract had expired in mid-June.

She was appointed to the post effective June 15, 2010 and holds a Legal Education Certificate from Hugh Wooding Law School, a Bachelors of Law (LLB) from the University of the West Indies and a Bachelor’s Degree in History from the University of Guyana.

However, sources say it was a smart move by Governor Boyd McCleary to have Mrs. Hinds stay on despite the talks of her not being able to handle the pressure. “She will be able to show the next DPP the ropes and how the system works.”

In a March 24, 2012 article published on Virgin Islands News Online, it was noted that applications for the judicial position was “quite small”.

According to the Government’s Human Resources Department website, the DPP’s responsibilities include and not limited to instituting and undertaking criminal proceedings against any person before any civil court in respect of any offence against any law in force in the Virgin Islands; ensure the preparation and submission of Performance Planning and Appraisal Report for all staff; liaise with the Governor, Commissioner of Police and other institutions on criminal matters; can take over and continue any such criminal proceedings that have been instituted by any other person or authority and oversee the day-to-day administration of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, among others.

The salary range for the DPP is between $78,043 – $87,719 annually commensurate with qualifications and experience.
