TOKYO, Japan- The Virgin Islands' national record holder in the Women's Long Jump event, Chantel E. Malone, was well beyond her best in the final of the Long Jump event at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, today, September 14, 2025.

Malone, making her 5th appearance at the World Athletics Championships and her 3rd final at Worlds, could only cut the sand at 6.33 metres, way below her Personal best of 7.08 metres.

In fact, Malone had qualified for the final with a best leap of 6.62 metres.

The gold medal was won by American Tara Davis-Woodhall, who had the best leap and world-leading time of 7.13 metres.

Silver was won by Malaika Mihambo of Germany (6.99), and bronze went to Natalia Linares of Colombia, who made a Personal Best leap of 6.92 metres.

Chantel E. Malone makes World Athletics Championship Long Jump Finals

Current National Record holder and Pan American Games gold medallist in Long Jump, Chantel E. Malone has secured a spot in the finals of the 2025 World Athletics Championship Long Jump event. 

Malone, 32, participated in the qualifiers earlier this morning, Saturday, September 13, 2025. She managed a 6.62M jump, landing her way into the finals. 

The Long Jump final is scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, September 14, 2025. 

Meanwhile, Djimon L. Gumbs competed in the Shot Put event today; however did not advance to the finals. 

6 athletes @ World Championships

Malone and Gumbs are just two of six athletes representing the VI at this year’s World Championships. This is the territory’s largest contingent at the games. 

The other athletes are Kyron A. McMaster, Rikkoi A.R. Brathwaite, Beyonce A. Defreitas, and Jaleel N. Croal.

The World Athletics Championships will end on September 21, 2025.

    Good job this young lady will get a medal but my question is has any company sponsor this lady yet ..these athletes work so hard an for what (good job) come on BVI Government other kids are watching..set and example..they are going up against the world best let's treat them that way so younger kids can work hard to do the same

      bvi people will say her people are rich why does she need help, but in reality we should help all athletes regardless of their background because they are making us look good on the world's stage

      The only one I saw doing that G sign, Focus on your craft, instill discipline with hard work, Set your distance mark and strive daily to achieve that.. Put the work in.
