ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards told Shaun King that he would have to return to the Sandy Lane Centre when he appeared before the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, June 7, 2013.

King, 28, has had recurring issues with marijuana usage and was both reprimanded and counselled for this on previous appearances at the Magistrate’s Court.

The defendant pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared before the court on February 20, 2013 and also admitted to marijuana usage ‘now and again’ at his appearance after the Magistrate highlighted that he displayed signs of drug usage at the time.

The Magistrate then asked if he needed drug counselling at the time before recommending a stint at Sandy Lane.

On this occasion, Magistrate Richards said his continued attendance at the Centre was recommended following the report she received.

Magistrate Richards told the accused there were a lot of issues to be worked out with his treatment. She also indicated that it was mentioned that he had anger management issues.

“Let’s see what happens going forward,” Magistrate Richards told King before advising that he return to the court in a few weeks.

King will next appear on July 26, 2013 for an update on his progress and treatment at the Centre.

Cable thief claims items stolen from hiding place

- admits to drug use

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Shaun King, 28, of Chalwell Estate pleaded guilty to stealing 500ft of #4 THHN electrical cable and 20ft of MCN cable when he appeared before the Magistrate’s court yesterday, February 20, 2013.

According to the allegations read by Principal Crown Counsel Tiffany Scatliffe, the Virtual Complainant (VC) stores electrical cables in his yard and on January 13, 2013 at approximately 9 A.M., left with his family to go to church and returned around 1 P.M.

When he arrived home his tenant who occupies the bottom floor told him that two men came into the yard and were removing cables. The tenant reportedly asked the men what they were doing and if they were working for the VC and they replied in the affirmative.

The tenant observed the men leaving ten minutes after in a white Mitsubishi jeep. Upon being told this information, the VC checked for his cables stored and discovered the missing quantity (valued at $1310) and made a report to the Police.

As a result of the investigations, King was met at the Road Town Police Station on January 20 at approximately 1:15 P.M. When he came to the station, King was observed to be driving a white Mitsubishi jeep.

The defendant was told that he was suspected of theft and allegedly replied, “Not me.. I aint know nothing about that.” He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of theft and informed of his rights and an audio/visual interview later conducted with him where he allegedly admitted to theft and removing the cables and also admitted telling the tenant that he was working for the VC. He denied that he was with anyone else and said he acted alone.

He reportedly took the cable to Sea Cows Bay where he planned to burn the wire to get the copper with the intention of selling it. He also alleged that the copper he produced was stolen from where he had it hidden. He was formally charged on January 21, 2013.

When asked by Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards what he had to say in his defence, King said, “I apologise for committing such a crime but at the time things were kind of rough and I had a lot of bills to pay… It shouldn’t have been that way, I should not commit a crime like that again.”

King admitted to meeting the VC prior to the theft and was also asked by the Magistrate what bill he had to pay. The defendant, who now resides with his mother, said that he bought some stuff in St Thomas and hadn’t gotten to clear it as yet.

Asked whether he thought it was alright to steal from the defendant even though he knew him, King responded, “Aint that it was ok, things was just bad…” Magistrate Richards then said, “Things are going to get worse when you come before me. Theft carries up to two years in this court and you have other things before me, so you are not a first time offender… this would be your third time.” The defendant reportedly has a total of 8 offences before the court and is reportedly currently registered in the Partnership for Peace Programme as well.

He admitted to the Magistrate that he didn’t get to weigh the stolen items to make a sale as someone had stolen it from his hiding place before he got to burn the items. Magistrate Richards then asked if he ever heard that “Thief from thief make God laugh” and told him that if he was fined before the court for the offence it would be multiple times the cost of the stolen items.

King also admitted to using drugs ‘now and again’ and the Magistrate advised that he seek treatment at the Sandy Lane Centre immediately.

He was then offered bail in the sum of $45,000 with one signed surety under the condition that he sought treatment and counselling for his drug use and asked to return for sentencing on March 27, 2013.
