ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Following an article posted on June 11, 2012 that Beverlie Brathwaite, the acting Chief Education Officer (CEO) will be replaced, Virgin Islands News Online can confirm that Ms. Brathwaite no longer holds the post.

In an email circulated today June 26, 2012 by Ms. Brathwaite to individuals within various areas of the education system, she confirmed that she received an official notification and that effective yesterday June 25, 2012, she is no longer the Acting Chief Education Officer.

“I have just received official notification (today) that effective June 25, 2012(yesterday), I am no longer the Acting Chief Education Officer,” the email from Ms. Brathwaite states.

“I therefore say a "Big Thank You" for your cooperation and assistance over the years. It was a pleasure serving and I wish you all the best for the remainder of the school year and in the new year when it comes. Let me remind you to continue doing your best and be not weary in well doing for in due season you shall reap if you faint not,” it continued.

On June 11, this news site had reported that the hammer was about to fall in the Department of Education with the Acting Deputy Chief Education Officer Jillian Douglas-Phillip will replace her boss, Ms. Brathwaite, in the coming weeks.

Ms. Brathwaite is expected to revert back to her post as an Education Officer.

It is this news site’s understanding that Education Officer Dr. Lavon P. Chalwell-Brewley, will act as Deputy CEO, in the Department of Education. It is believed that the proposal has already reached the powerful Public Service Commission, and the proposal enjoys the full support of Education and Culture Minister Myron V. Walwyn.

It was Minister Walwyn who at the last sitting of the House of Assembly showered praises on Douglas-Phillip and described her as a hard worker and a tower of strength in the Department of Education.

Education Department History of Acting CEOs

Since the study leave of Angel Smith, the substantive holder of the Post of Chief Education Officer, the department has gone through a series of Acting Chief Education Officers in the pass 10 years and even two who were proposed but never sat in the seat. The Acting Chief Education Officers included, Dr. Quincy Lettsome, Mrs. Prudence Mathavious, Dr. Marcia Potter, and the current holder Ms. Brathwaite.

The Chief Education Officer is responsible for the general administration of the Territory’s education system and also manages and supervises the Department of Education and all public schools, including the development of curricula, maintenance of schools, and coordination of teacher training.

Many shake-ups since NDP took office in 2011

Following the election last year of the National Democratic Party Government of Dr. D. Orlando Smith to office, there have been many high level public sector shake-ups, transfers, extended leaves and termination and hiring of many consultants.

Some of the shakeups included but are not limited to the firing of Ray George from the Ministry of Communications and Works, the up-coming sacking of Esther Georges from the National Parks Trust, the removal of Oleanvine Maynard from the Labour Department, and Dr. Drexel Glasgow from the Public Works Department, the extended leave of Kharid Fraser from her post of Accountant General and the none renewal of contracts of Otto O’Neal the former Cabinet Secretary, and the Executive Director of the Virgin Islands International Finance Center Sherri L. Ortiz, in effect forcing them out.

All these movements have been firstly and accurately reported by this news site, despite the very political attempt by some elected officials to suggest that the information reported was “misleading” or “malicious”, which would have been if, as they described, a serious violation of this news site’s high ethical standards, practices and policies.

The Chief Education Officer’s post is a government job that attracts a salary of $62,900-$92,150 in grade 17.

So what if she is from Sea Cow's Bay. She is stagnant and I think the move is the right move. She still will be working in the department. Jillian is more a go getter kind of person who the department need to get things moving. The governor has limited strength with what can be done with the moving of civil servants..thank God..

to crank shaft; Hush you silly backside. An indigenous b v islander is one who can trace their parents and grandparents to the BVI…being born in the BVI or Virgin Islands (do not want to offend Donald) There are both NDP and VI indigenous people for example, Alvin, Ralph, Fraser (VIP) Dr. Smith, Marlon Penn, Dolores (NDP) etc. are well known indigenous members of the House. The none indigenous who either parents or grandparents were NOT NOT born in the BVI are Mark (not even born here), Myron Archie ect. Get the facts right... Therefore these none indigenous people elected have no real stake in the BVI or roots outside of their own personal or political inertest and that is well known that is why if you notice the three of them Mark, Myron and Archie are on the hustle!!!

Brathwaite so what? Like VIP never moved people around when they were in power, in fact, they moved their own people in places they did nto want to go, so allu just hush. This island man story soooo tired now...Listen people, there is NOTHING you all can do to the elected officials who you claim are not from here..their election is a done deal..leave it alone before you get heart attack..

what our education system needs is to free teachers up to teach well. Put in reasonable evaluation procedures for teachers. Expand what counts as success for our children...WE DO NOT NEED JUST A NEW FACE AT THE TOP JUST BECAUSE A MINISTER THINKS AS OF TODAY SHE DOES WHATEVER HE WANTS...THIS IS GOING KILL OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM.

Our education system is not the best at all. It is in need of a good clean up. So whatever has to be done to fix this problem, I am on board. It doesn't matter what government is in. Things that use to work long ago is not working now. The children are not even equipped for Universities.

Total Rubish. Beverly is experienced people with a positive and polite attitude towards her department. Jillian is a hot mess. This will surely bite Myron hard. Her attitude is horrible. Being a teacher does not qualifiy one to be the CEO of Education.

You need 2 dictionaries and 1 hard hot greasy slap for that DUMB ILLITERATE POST!! When the departments are not functioning properly, you all cry and ball about it. Now they're doing something about it you cry louder. Government has over 3000 people hired in a Territory with about 30,000 people. SO Government hires equivalent to 10% of the population 90% of staff being locals so do the math on that. Yet we can't get anything useful out of there, always total nonsense, why? Because a set of old backward people in there sitting for years doing ... and get so used to it they feel they own the place and nothing new should happen. When NDP appoint someone they too old give the others a chance. WHen they send home someone, why they do that it's unfair yadda. Pure ignorance. It's going to be a long ride cuz NDP ain't goin nowhere hahaa...

If I was in your shoes I would go home and try to enjoy the rest of my days on this world spending some time gardening, reading the Bible, and enjoying nature without worrrying about the eduacation system. You've been there long enough to see things have not changed the way it should and it will get worst before it get better. You can help children in your area with science since this is what you taught before going to the Department of Eudcation or be a mentor with the local school.
