On June 11, this news site had reported that the hammer was about to fall in the Department of Education with the Acting Deputy Chief Education Officer Jillian Douglas-Phillip will replace her boss, Ms. Brathwaite, in the coming weeks.
Ms. Brathwaite is expected to revert back to her post as an Education Officer.
It is this news site’s understanding that Education Officer Dr. Lavon P. Chalwell-Brewley, will act as Deputy CEO, in the Department of Education. It is believed that the proposal has already reached the powerful Public Service Commission, and the proposal enjoys the full support of Education and Culture Minister Myron V. Walwyn.
It was Minister Walwyn who at the last sitting of the House of Assembly showered praises on Douglas-Phillip and described her as a hard worker and a tower of strength in the Department of Education.
Education Department History of Acting CEOs
Since the study leave of Angel Smith, the substantive holder of the Post of Chief Education Officer, the department has gone through a series of Acting Chief Education Officers in the pass 10 years and even two who were proposed but never sat in the seat. The Acting Chief Education Officers included, Dr. Quincy Lettsome, Mrs. Prudence Mathavious, Dr. Marcia Potter, and the current holder Ms. Brathwaite.
The Chief Education Officer is responsible for the general administration of the Territory’s education system and also manages and supervises the Department of Education and all public schools, including the development of curricula, maintenance of schools, and coordination of teacher training.
Many shake-ups since NDP took office in 2011
Following the election last year of the National Democratic Party Government of Dr. D. Orlando Smith to office, there have been many high level public sector shake-ups, transfers, extended leaves and termination and hiring of many consultants.
Some of the shakeups included but are not limited to the firing of Ray George from the Ministry of Communications and Works, the up-coming sacking of Esther Georges from the National Parks Trust, the removal of Oleanvine Maynard from the Labour Department, and Dr. Drexel Glasgow from the Public Works Department, the extended leave of Kharid Fraser from her post of Accountant General and the none renewal of contracts of Otto O’Neal the former Cabinet Secretary, and the Executive Director of the Virgin Islands International Finance Center Sherri L. Ortiz, in effect forcing them out.
All these movements have been firstly and accurately reported by this news site, despite the very political attempt by some elected officials to suggest that the information reported was “misleading” or “malicious”, which would have been if, as they described, a serious violation of this news site’s high ethical standards, practices and policies.
The Chief Education Officer’s post is a government job that attracts a salary of $62,900-$92,150 in grade 17.
