UPDATE: Al & Vondi take Poker Run’s 1st prize 2nd time in a row

“Yes, Yes, Yes… second time, yes, you can’t test us, yes we did it,” shouted Alcinder as the event’s organisers called their names and number. Al and Vondy are two Virgin Islanders who have a passion for speed boats and the sea.
Known as a guy full of excitement and positivity, Jamison Hopkins aka Jamie danced in his unique style to the stage to claim his prize of $5,000 as he came in second place.
The third prize was claimed by David James, who was not the type with the big hype and celebration but rather stood very close to the announcement table waiting to hear his name called as he was very sure he had something to take home. James was also sure it was not going to be a gift certificate but rather some cash.
He took home the 3rd prize of $3,000.
There was some confusion about the 4th place prize as there was some mix-up. That cash prize was $1,000 and, according to the owner of Leverick Bay and the main coordinator of the Poker Run, Mr Nick Willis, “We saw what went wrong and we will fix that for sure.”
Donations
As usual, the cash generated by the Poker Run is usually dedicated to the charitable and other social groups in the Virgin Gorda Community and once again the Diabetes Association of Virgin Gorda benefited as they will be receiving $10k from the proceeds of the event.
$2,000 was also announced for a cycling group and according to Leverick Bay’s Monica Willis, “There are lots more to be donated which we will announce very soon. More donations are coming but we have to sort them out properly,” she said.
The fashion
Yet another year in succession, Mr Nice Guy put on a fashion show which had its high anticipation as usual. Models blazed the catwalk showing off some of the finest pieces of swim wears, beach wear and even pieces suited for an afternoon brunch.
Mr Nice Guy also promoted a raffle which has big cash winnings of up to $3,000, a Jeep Wrangler unlimited and flat screen TV. The drawing date is yet to be announced.

More boats but fewer hands @ 2015 Leverick Bay Poker Run
LEVERICK BAY, Virgin Gorda, VI – The 2015 Leverick Bay Poker Run is underway on the waters of the Virgin Islands, today May 24, 2015.
The event, which is held to raise money for charity, got underway around 11am with a pacer leading out the boats out of harbour and allowing them fair spread for an incident free start.
According to one of the organisors, Mr Nick Willis, there are more boats taking part in the run compared to previous years, however, he said most have been going for the fun and haven’t been buying ‘hands’.
The money for charity and to offset expenses for the event is raised through the buying of hands for the Poker Run.
Nevertheless, Mr Willis said he was thrilled with the many participation of boats and that the event has been incident free so far.
He told Virgin Islands News Online that the first boat should complete its run in a matter of minutes.
Last year’s Leverick Bay Poker Run race was won by Al and Vondy, two Virgin Islanders, who were aboard the speedboat ‘Donzi Daytona’. They took the first place prize of $8,000.
The two were followed by another resident of the VI, Heather Holland who copped the 2ndprize, ‘EVA DEL MAR’ came in 3rd.
The proceeds of the day’s event are usually donated to groups on Virgin Gorda as a charitable gesture by the owners of Leverick Bay Resort and Marina, Nick and Monica Willis. Last year the Diabetes Association of Virgin Gorda received $10,000 from the proceeds of the event. The Virgin Islands Animal Rescue, the BVI Cancer Society VG branch and a Youth track team were also given cash donations of $1,000k each.
