WASHINGTON, DC, USA- A draft resolution calling for the full decolonisation of the Virgin Islands (VI) has been adopted by the United Nations (UN) Special Committee on Decolonisation (C-24).

The resolution, up for consideration by the wider membership of the UN reaffirms that “in the process of decolonisation of the British Virgin Islands, there is no alternative to the principle of self-determination, which is also a fundamental human right, as recognised under the relevant human rights conventions,” a press release from Government of the VI today, Thursday, July 10, 2025, states.

The VI is one of the 17 remaining Non-Self-Governing Territories falling under the remit of the UN Special Committee on Decolonisation.

The C-24 has been mandated by the UN General Assembly to help facilitate the complete eradication of colonialism by 2030.

Concerns over Order in Council

In the draft resolution, concern is raised “that the Administering Power (UK) put an Order in Council on hold to partially suspend the Constitution if the Government of the United Kingdom assesses that the implementation of the recommendations does not proceed satisfactorily”.

It also makes note of the completion of the governance reforms as agreed upon with the United Kingdom in 2022, by the VI government.

C-24 mission visited VI in 2024

A visiting mission from C-24 was sent to the VI in August 2024 to assess the progress of decolonisation and ascertained that the Territory is ready for a full measure of self-government and should take preparatory steps.

The report also commended a UN-backed education programme on the political status options that were sanctioned by the UN to “achieve a full measure of self-government that includes integration, free association or independence”.

The draft resolution will be considered by the UN Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonisation) at the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York before final vote and passage by UN Member States later this year.

AND WHEREAS the Premier and Minister of Finance continues to dialogue with the UN Special Committee on Decolonization on the political future of the Territory vis-à-vis its relationship with the United Kingdom without having a national conversation with the people of the Territory to ascertain their wishes.

Majority of the people here don't want independence because with no external oversight the cookie jar would soon be empty.

Suppose you believe in self-determination, plan and prepare for it. Many of us here are afraid and don't believe that we can govern ourselves. The Government needs to have a referendum to see where the people are leaning.

Did the UN did their own investigation to find out what's going on in the BVI,? Would like to sew the UN representative come to the BVI and have a live news conference.. Until these 2 things happen, UN's suggestions, recommendations are useless, meritless

The giver of an injection doesn't feel the pain of its prick, and sting, the receiver does.

In accordance to the topic issue, no decolonisation as yet until justice is first been served to the people of the B.V.I by our local political leaders, in spite of what the UN says or not says. Only those that are feeling the pressure can true testify of it negative impact, not the UN.
Independance yes, but not without better- balancing political representation for, hopefully soon, all of the people of the B.V.I
Is this too much to expect of our local political leaders?

Can't wait for y'all to get y'all "freedom" if coi ain show y'all how our own has been abusing there powers for self enrichment while you suffer you still think our politicians mean you well then y'all deserve everything that comes after that... Good luck. If history hasn't proven what happens to Caribbean countries that went independent with corrupted leaders then y'all might need to take a look at our neighbours to see how they're doing with their high crimes rates and struggling residents and they're not a major drug transhipment point compared to us. USA soon block our visa waiver treaty when them see a spike in human trafficking to our usvi neighbours.. let's see the bvi passport in action after that...oh sorry I mean "VI" passport

Due to their small size and lack of natural resources, these islands cannot stand alone. The present pillars of the economy - tourism and financial services - are vulnerable to outside events and could topple at a moment's notice.

I suggest that the UN Special Committee on Decolonisation spend time on the Caribbean islands that in recent times have sort independence and monitor their fate under alternative colonial masters.
