ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has once again condemned violence in all forms in the VI, regardless of who the perpetrator may be.

The Premier made the statements in a March 25, 2022, press conference on current matters in the VI and his statement comes following a recent shooting outside a supermarket.

Speaking on behalf of his Government, the Premier said, “For generations, our people have worked hard to create and maintain a peaceful and safe community. Our people are a people of BVILOVE who look out for each other, who respect each other, and who respect our community - and for sure who respect God.”

“We are resolved to keep it this way. Unlawful conduct, especially as these relate to serious crime – and in particular gun crimes – has no place in our peaceful Virgin Islands,” Hon Fahie added.

Gov't will support Governor & Police - Premier

He said while constitutional responsibility for security and public safety rests with the Governor, the Government is fully committed to our role in supporting the Governor and the Commissioner of Police in their function of mitigating criminal activity.

“As I said recently, your government continues to work with Customs, Immigration, the Police, the Attorney General’s Office, the Director of Public Prosecution’s Office and the other elements of the justice system, to assist in them having the needed resources to protect the Virgin Islands,” he said.

The Premier reminded that authorities alone cannot solve this problem, “all of us as Virgin Islanders, Belongers and residents have a part to play. If you see something, say something. You can do it anonymously.”

The admonished residents to encourage persons in social circles and in the VI community to stay on the right path.

Needs legislation that will deter persons from getting access to guns (customs) and punish them harshly for simple unlawful possession of guns. But, many of you are afraid of passing these laws because you don't know if they will come back to haunt your own family. Political interference in the judiciary system will also be necessary. Appealing to people's morality is poor governance at worst and inadequate at best.

Nice speech but solving all the outstanding unsolved violent crimes would be more impressive. Like who killed Frandie Martin Jr. with a boat back in mid Oct. 2021?

Yes!! Who killed John LaGrassa with a boat near Guana Island in early January 2020. Two plus years pass and nobody charged yet!

Crimes can be seen in many stages:
    Examples:
    1. Petty thief: child stole mommy pancake and share with friends.
    2. Robbery of others possessions.
    3. Overcharged of goods. Underpayment of wages, salary, etc.
    4. Trust but don't pay.
5 burned neighbor's property, homes, vehicles, boats etc.
    6. Physical body harm to others unnecessarily.
Rape, stabbing others with sharp-pointed objects. and blunted objects. and other molestation acts.
Yes, and not forgotten, in mine opinion, political crimes.
Gun crimes most result in serious body injuries, including death, but dead is dead, whether by guns or others objects. Summary point: All violent crimes that lead to death should not be tolerated in the British Virgin Islands.
