ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) says his Government of National Unity is looking to create a thriving tourism industry in the VI.

Speaking during a Friday, September 23, 2022, press conference, Hon Wheatley added that in addition to a thriving tourism industry, the goal is also for the economy to be more tourism-led with steps already taken to make this happen.

“First, as Tourism Minister, I will be discussing with the new Chair of the BVI Tourist Board the importance of a short-term plan to guide the growth and development of the sector over the next two years while a tourism master plan is developed to take our tourism product to the next level,” he revealed.

Dr Wheatley detailed that in the meantime, his government is also working diligently to make improvements in areas such as airlift, as well in enhancing the tourism product.

Portfolios under Premier's office

“As a first step, the Culture portfolio has been transferred to the Premier's Office where it will be integrated with the Tourism portfolio. This is the approach of many countries who see Culture as an integral part of their tourism product.”

He continued, “For us here in the Virgin Islands, this will include ensuring our museums and historical sites are properly managed and promoted as tourist attractions, and that the full artistic talent of our people can serve as valuable entertainment to visitors and our own domestic tourism market.”

He added that the Festival and Fairs portfolio has also been transferred to the Premier’s Office, and the Tourist Board will have much more involvement in the planning and marketing of not only the local Emancipation Festival, but all other festivals and fairs year-round.

More talks ongoing - Premier

Dr Wheatley detailed that in terms of airlift, discussions are ongoing regarding flight access to the mainland US with talks looking very promising as well as a plan to engage and consult with industry partners and stakeholders on how local tourism can be boosted.

“We also continue to examine the best means by which to expand the runway at the Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport and to attract new hotel developments to the BVI. Announcements on progress in these areas will be made in due course,” he said while noting that the VI continues to take part in many regional tourism events.

Yet look what has sprung up in his place. This country is plagued with bad leadership…doing things for their own interest and that of their friends. Friendship, friendship will lead you to ruins when one’s feelings rules a country over God’s wisdom.

If you want tourism to flourish then please:
1 - tell labour to get work permits approved so that businesses can employ enough staff
2 - tell customs to stop messing around people trying to import
3 - tell immigration not to be so rude to people when they arrive, and to process people quickly
4 - drop the ludicrous add on fees that people have to pay when they arrive - especially if they come in from the day from STT for the day

When will this Whistle Blower Legislation be on stream? Or does it ‘not’ apply to management and Premiers?

This is Cronyism to the height! Let’s see if he will remove Igwe from over this department again?

Governor please investigate the Culture Department. Please investigate why the Premier is truly moving the Culture Department under ‘his’ direct leadership and what challenges this Department has had for the past couple years with management. You say you strive for good governance Governor, then prove it! Investigate why the staff’s and various stakeholders complaints, has been ignored and marginalized and why.

Please conduct a ‘thorough’ investigation into this matter!

“As a first step, the Culture portfolio has been transferred to the Premier's Office where it will be integrated with the Tourism portfolio. This is the approach of many countries who see Culture as an integral part of their tourism product.”

You would think that all this would have ended with Andrew! Drain the swamp!!

Those things that has been hidden and covered up in these lands, will come to light. The foothold that evil has had will be removed in the light of truth! The culture of silence is over! A new culture of truth has begun. Thank you Jesus!

‘They're still silent. That's what makes so many Christians fake.
God is going to flip this whole thing upside down. Watch. The last shall be first and the first shall be last because the ones who are first and buddy buddy don't have a backbone. They won't do anything to mess up connections.
I am going to keep saying it until you guys see the tables being flipped. It's already happening in the Spirit but many folks don't want to see it.’

Before you try to satisfy tourists needs, remember we the people who live here, paying NHI,SOCIAL SECURITY, TAX ON WAGES, PROPERTY TAX,ROAD LICENSES and TAX ON WIRE TRANSFER yet we don't live comfortable because of poor health care, poor infrastructure on road, long hours at immigration, DMV,labour departments and the hospital water going out almost every day in east end,is this not something to be look into?, you as the premier neglect the people for not questioning those district representative why is east end road always keep repairing? Its because your project manager have too many friends so its not necessary to checking projects after it is completed or east end people are not worthy in your eyes?people from west end are scared to drive in east end because they know the cost to fix a vehicle in the mechanic shop!the government and its staff need to shuffle they are getting lazy for doing one thing over and over, DMV is one, that's a place where once you have money you could own a license...in front east end police station is like a lake while the drain is dry...soon I will start to plant cane in those potholes in east end because the government and their employees are going to work in helicopter..remember elections soon come and them duty rats will come out squeak for support..

He don't know a thing about tourism. Neither does the new chairperson nor the director. But talking like he know. No consultation with the experts or tourist stakeholders but done steady making moves. Start wrong end wrong.

Exactly, this move is not for tourism it’s to move Culture under his direct management. Read between the lines people! Understand what is going on.

The govt can’t get the airport expansion idea out of their heads. The last expansion estimates (more than 5 years ago) were in the $ 200 million range (original infill idea was closer to 2x as much). and, as everybody knows, thoses costs would be higher today, and total project costs end up being much higher (Peebles ran $ 120 miilion, original bid 65 million, Pier Park $ 50 million, but cost more than $ 85 million). Consider that $ 200 million at 5% over 20 years is $3.8 million a month. For reference, Territory’s annual GDP is around $ 400 million. The average number of monthly overnight visitors pre-pandemic was about 25,000, so you’d be looking at an airport fee of around $ 150 per head ($600 for a family of 4) to service that loan, since it is customary here to foist as much cost to outsiders. Another problem is that 25,000 monthly visitors (assuming they all come by plane to Beef) works out to about 800 arrivals per day. That would mean 4 planes per day +. Is there any evidence that this would happen? On a sustained basis? Places like Grenada (4x population of the BVIs) have direct flights to UK/US/Canada, but only several times a week. Wouldn’t we better off if we spent, say 10% of the projected aiprot expansion cossts, on developing and improving education so that future leaders can come up with better ideas that squandering more than half of the territory’s GDP on a white elephant?

tourism is a dream in the distant future for the BVI. Cruise ship and bareboat charter guests are the best the BVI will get during this decade. Neverthelessl government is off to a good start by cancelling Government Official No. 1 last summer.
