ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– New Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has indicated that his Unity Government is looking to have the Governor of the Virgin Islands, H.E. John J. Rankin, CMG have overall responsibility to implement the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) recommendations, but under a democratic system of Governance.

This was revealed by the Premier in a statement on May 24, 2022, where he noted that the CoI Report calls for its recommendations to be implemented under direct rule where the Governor would sit as the sole authority.

True Modern partnership with UK

“Alternatively, however, the Government of National Unity has conceptualised how implementation would work under democratic governance in which the Governor, Premier, Cabinet, Ministries and the House of Assembly work together to implement the recommendations,” he said.

Hon Wheatley said in the proposal submitted to the United Kingdom outlines a framework for implementation, which would divide responsibilities accordingly.

“The Governor would be responsible for overall implementation of the CoI Report recommendations, in partnership with the Premier, and monitoring the Government’s work programme and implementation timetable,” he said.

He added that the Premier would support the implementation of the recommendation through engagement with the Governor and coordination of the Ministers of Government.

Premier will drive legislative reform

“As the Leader of Government business in the House of Assembly, I would also drive the legislative reform agenda; the Cabinet would be responsible for agreeing and passing policies necessary to implement reforms,” he further revealed.

For the local Ministries, Hon Wheatley indicated that they would be responsible for implementing the reform policies agreed by Cabinet and the House of Assembly would be responsible for passing all relevant legislation necessary for delivering reforms.

He said using that proposal, the Government of National Unity believes that such an approach would allow for the successful implementation of the CoI Report recommendations under continued democratic governance.

Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) has reached out to the Premier for information on when the proposal submitted to the UK will be made public; however, no response was received up to publication time.

Why is it necessary to turn back the hands of time when a workable solution has been proposed. Is there an ulterior motive at play here. Be careful. There is a lot more to this than most people realize.

I would really appreciate if the premier would stop referring as the Unity Governemt. It's nothing unified about this. We are the virgin islands ams you are the Government of the Virgin Islands. Stop trying to sell something that's not real. We just hearing a bunch of talking enought is enough. Make your solutions public let's we the people know and we decide. I just sick and tired of all the politricks. I feel therr is no change at all. Andrew still running things as far as I can see.

To the Unity Government, show everyone you mean business and fix the bl00dy incinerator. Also, while you’re at it, what happened about the legislation that was going to ban single use plastic? This stuff is so important and yet continually ignored, this is our future, our planet, please do something about this because without this we are doomed and nothing else matters.

Mr. Wheatley, clearly you don't have an understanding of the entire report, its recommendations nor on whose shoulders the responsibility lies.

Please Mr. Wheatley, this is getting just too much! I'm getting the impression that you think within yourself that you are quite innocent of what has taken place under the VIP government and now you are the chosen one to come and set things right. That's being delusional!!
