ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Opposition Member, Hon Carvin Malone (AL), who crossed the floor after the formation of the Government of National Unity led by Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), has described the formation of that Government as one that resulted from a coup and not democratic elections.

Hon Malone was a guest on the August 11, 2022, episode of ‘The Narrative’ talk show with host Calistra Farrier on the VI and other current matters in the territory.

When asked about the state of politics in the VI, Hon Malone said, “Right now it's been clouded with this Commission of Inquiry because, at the end of the day, you will recall that after the events of April 28 [2022] within a five day [period], whether it's questionable or not, we were able to… form a coup, for lack of a better word.”

As such, he said the VI moved from a “Change of government elected by the people” to one selected, which resulted in a coalition government that came without the people ever going to the polls.

With the Government of the Virgin Islands and the Opposition, along with the people, against direct rule by the United Kingdom (UK), the Government and Opposition announced a unity government on May 4, 2022, with the hope of staving off UK direct rule over the findings of a Commission of Inquiry.

VIP Gov't, Opposition forms new Unit Government

The National Unity Government includes Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7); Junior Minister for Tourism, Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines (R6); Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports, Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL) and Minister for Transportation, Utilities and Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5).

Other members include the previous Opposition Leader as the new Minister for Health and Social Development in the person of Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8); Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) and Junior Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Hon Shereen D. Flax-Charles (AL).

Dr Wheatley has said the elected political party members met and agreed to propose a national unity government to Governor John J. Rankin and said that different political parties would be represented in Cabinet as this would give the best political representation as a government that will be working closely with the governor and the United Kingdom on reforms.

Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) has reached out to Premier Dr Wheatley for his response to the formation of his Government of National Unity being described as a coup by Hon Malone; however, no response was received up to publication time.

The former Opposition Leader Hon Penn; however, has said the National Unity Government was only expected to last for 10 to 12 months ahead of the 2023 constitutionally due elections.

I said 13 must go, however you have my support mr Malone, even if it’s not holding office!

You are the only one offering clarity and bring the facts! It’s unfortunate you were tarnished by your leadership for the last 3 years!

I can say in agreement it was a coup, orchestrated by our mutual antagonist in the west!

Some people want to cover up for the British but we know the truth and we know who helped them quell the anger of the people!

Hon. Carvin Malone, former VIP now opposition member, you very well know that the coup that you mentioned is shameful lie. We are not sure whether or not the Unity Government will remain in power next coming election, but to say that a coup was staged by them is clear evidence that you don't deserved to be considered as as to be voted in power as a political representative of which Party the voters choose is very clear.

What is clear to me is that many of us refuse to acknowledge the truth of what happened. We had a Constitutional democratically elected Government which was removed unconstitutionally from their elected positions. The Constitution outlined how members of Government can be removed and it was clearly not followed. In collusion with the UK, the Governor and members of the elected Government they negated the elected Government and formed a political Government with the UK's blessings. Even now they are behaving like a puppet Government for the UK. The Constitution has not been suspended so we have every right to operate under the conditions laid out by the Constitution. We choose not to fight for our rights because we fear that our Constitution will be suspended. The irony is that while we fear its official suspension it has been rendered null and void. We should have maintain our Government and fight against the Order in Council. It's difficult to fight against our mother country when we put their colonial rule above our dignity and rights.

        @Josiah's bay

You are speaking like a child. You think the recommendation to suspend the constitution was a mere threat? The removal of the Fahie-led government was a certainty, one way or the other. It came down to a choice as to who would implement the COI recommendations - whether it be the proposed Unity government as a caretaker until the next elections, or the Governor as a dictator for years.

Grow up and use your head, not your emotions.

There was no need to create a new government while excluding the will of the people!

Mr Malone is correct, young leader moved unilaterally in a time when the people wanted to have a say!

The votes belong to the people, government is to work for the people!!!! Not be overridden by overly zealous politicians with desires of grandeur!

Long look please keep this man out!

Do yourself a favour Carvin. Shut up. Go sit down. A Government of representatives is elected by the people. The political parties decide who will be Premiers and Ministers. The Government is STILL made of representatives, as elected, they have just reorganised. With the exception of the Speaker, there are no new unelected members in the house. There are no unelected Ministers. It's amazing how different things look with the removal of one man. It's amazing how all of those representatives vote differently in his absence. He may have been a dictator, but they are also weak and have previously failed to represent their constituents' and their own views honestly in the past. At least they are with us now. Will you clean up your act and be the representative people hoped you might be? Or will become the fossil that you are currently projecting yourself to be. Elections are coming. You decide.

Why was Hon. Malone removed from his Ministry? It wasn't fraud , it wasn't incompetence - It was simply because he was seen as a threat to power. Malone is a strategic , competent statesman that brought back the VIP from 2 elected Representatives to winning the Government. He has been VIP for 2 decades and can stand on their accomplishments . He should have been deputy but Head coach was threatened , same way that current is now. He condemned the former Premier without abandoning him , that's character right there. Nobody has pointed to anything wrong that Malone has done. I respect someone who can stand by someone in time of need rather than run. Does not mean they endorse the behavior just means they have a spine. Hon. Malone is great advocate for the BVI. He has my vote.

so help me to understand, The person that was the Deputy Premier , second in command , hand picked by former Premier has NO culpability for The former Premier's actions , but His 2 Ministers who are long standing loyal VIP Members hold all the blame. Is the entire VIP then condemned because of 1 man's action? What about all the other VIP members still there? What is their liability? There appears to be some alternative motives here . Again I ask where is any evidence of wrong doing by Hon. Malone and Hon. Vincent Wheatley. There is none .
