BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Former Deputy Premier in the Virgin Islands (VI), Dr the Hon Kedrick D. Pickering said the next step for the VI to move forward, out of the Commission of Inquiry period, is for the country to head to the polls and get a reset.

“Half of the things in the Commission of Inquiry report and recommendations are things that we brought on ourselves… and we have to be responsible to correct those things if we're going to move forward. It was we who called for a Commission of Inquiry, wasn't it us?,” he said.

Dr Pickering was at the time speaking as a guest during the July, 5, 2022, edition of the Honestly Speaking radio show with host Claude O. Skelton-Cline.

“Now, I see something else happening now that we've got to be really, really careful with, We have a Unity Government…. It is what it is for this present time. It came together primarily to stave off the United Kingdom government suspending our Constitution.”

Dr Pickering added, “It [unity Government] has a responsibility to ensure that the recommendations from the Commission of Inquiry are implemented within the time frame. That has been agreed to and we have to ensure that we do that. Otherwise, we're putting ourselves in some additional problems,” he said.

Unity Government just interim - Dr Pickering

The former Deputy Premier said the citizen of this country now have to pay attention to the fact that the Unity Government is just an interim Government, as the country still needs a reset and that opportunity will be presented at the next general elections.

“The Unity Government has a responsibility to take us from where we are now to the election, then the people must be involved in the election process. They must listen to all the issues that are being debated, have a responsibility to go to the polls and vote in people who are capable of taking the country forward,” he added.

Dr Pickering said such a process will allow the VI to look towards the future, as the fight is no longer with the British, but rather for internal change.

He said the Unity Government has its role and the VI must understand that the Government will also have to take the VI forward to the elections where persons will have a say in the matter and the country can be rebuilt from there.

Will the unity set up brake up and everyone goes back to base, or the unity set up will contest as the unity set up? Imaging they now together working together and that's a very good thing, then they have to go back to base and start throwing stones and casting blames at each other. That won't look good...Will wait and see...

We have to rectify the current situation by getting back our constitutional rule. It makes no sense to elect a Government that will still be under the bully pulpit of the Governor. It's either UN and international intervention to make the UK respect self-determination or independence as the last straw.

Picko wants to be premier but that won't happen. Carvin wants to be able to give himself and party mates more contracts but that won't happen. They should support the Unity that is paying for their yrs of mismanagement instead of worrying about getting back in power. Dissolve all the parties for 4 years and just let the best people work.

What sense does it make to get to the next election if our people and systems are not ready. If we don't provide the infrastructure, regardless of who is elected, we will have the same issues.

Look at the state you left Brandywine in and the disrespect showed to the landowners in that area. Mr., you failed us woefully and no amount of apologies will suffice. GO SIT DUNG!
