NEW YORK, USA – The United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization has approved 20 draft resolutions and decisions to be forwarded to the General Assembly for adoption, with regard to the implementation of the Declaration on the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples.

Amongst those draft resolutions, was ‘A/AC.109/2022/L.14’ on the [British] Virgin Islands, where the UN recognized that all available options for self-determination of the Territory are valid as long as they are in accordance with the freely expressed wishes of the people of the British Virgin Islands and in conformity with the clearly defined principles contained in General Assembly resolutions of December 14, 1960.

Focus on 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories

The draft resolution was approved on June 24, 2022, during the 8th 2022 meeting of the UN Special Select Committee on Decolonalism, where the committee expressed concern that more than 60 years after the adoption of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, there remain 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories, including the [British] Virgin Islands.

The draft resolution pointed to the importance of decolonization as it related to the target set by the United Nations to eradicate colonialism by 2030 and the plan of action for the International Decades for the Eradication of Colonialism.

It also states it recognized that the specific characteristics and the aspirations of the people of the [British] Virgin Islands require flexible, practical, and innovative approaches to the options for self-determination, without any prejudice to territorial size, geographical location, size of population or natural resources.

VI will assert its right - Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley

Current Premier of the Virgin Islands, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has indicated that while the Government of National Unity will implement to CoI report recommendations and bring reform to the territory, the Virgin Islands will still be asserting its United Nations-backed rights that colonialism must be a thing of the past.

Dr the Hon Wheatley was at the time speaking during the Tuesday, April 5, 2022, edition of VIP Let’s Talk.

He said through attending the UN Special Committee meetings on Decolonisation (C-24), it has been guaranteed that colonialism must be a thing of the past for countries like VI, a British Overseas Territory (OT).

“We are asserting our right that have been guaranteed, inalienable rights which has been acknowledged by the United Kingdom and all the other members of the United Nations, who have signed on to the United Nations Charters,” he said.

“Of course, we have a Commission of Inquiry that was commissioned by the Governor and backed by the UN, but it does not mean that we can have our rights taken away from us,” he added.

Of course that is not the real me. Independence is a longer term objective , but first we must be certain that we have systems in place to ensure there are no more more Fahies and the other crooks in charge of the place. That would be disastrous.

That sentence makes no sense. Did you mean independence is essential?

Independence from what? From cronyism, dishonesty, corruption? Or, perhaps, narco trafficking? Or, oversight from others? BVI could indeed sever its link with the UK, but that would not free it from others wishing to look into nefarious activities the BVI has become associated with. Besides, it’s all well and good to assert one’s rights to sovereignty, but can the BVIs, if left to its own devices, run itself in a transparent and ethical manner consistent with the UN’s expectations of a government that serve the needs of its people and not the elected government officials? The CoI report would lead one to believe that this is not a safe bet.

The USA is the world's biggest dictatorship nation under the disguised of democracy. Only people that don't follow world's government politic, and power ravenous politicians would want you to accept this truth.
In my strong opinion, former Premier Andrew A. Fahie wanted to become the first independent leader of our country.
I also that current Premier Hon. Dr. Natalio Sajande Wheatley has the same mindset.
Be careful my people, be very careful.
Don't believe everything you that think is true. Don't believe everything that you believe is true. Don't believe everything that you hear is true. In this world of politics lies is the norm, but truth is that exception. We all do believe in various issues, but the tree truth is the only tree that bears the fruit of righteousness. The choice is yours, and mine to choose wisely.
I desire the best for all the people of our country, namely: British Virgin Islands.
Love to all this day, and in the future.
Let us let knowledge, and proven wisdom guide our dicisions daily.

Is it going to be the people of the VI asserting their rights to move on from a colonial past? Or is it going to be a corrupt VI elite asserting their right to run drugs and do whatever they want whilst oppressing their own? These Unity folk only speaking for themselves it would seem. They do not speak for the will of the VI.

Earlier this morning during my prayers connection with our Creator, I received a troubling vision. The vision I saw trash, distraction, and dryness, but I also say some green, not many heathy trees. All is not loss nor will all be loss. There will be better days, and years for people of the country, if we curb our greed (lust) for celebrity fashion, and mental illustration that fill the pockets of the few, but leave the much larger majority of our people, (the politicians boss) suffering to meet their minimum needs, daily. Mercy given, mercy will receive.
Believe it or not, receive it or not.
    Love to all.

Excellent news!!! We the people of the BVI, and with the help of others have built this nation to what it is today. We MUST continue to forge ahead. We have the right to decide for ourselves what is best for us. If we decide to go independent we will be able to get there and be successful at it. Thanks to the COI for getting us on track. Let’s fix the system and in two years hold a referendum on the way forward. Let US decide for US. Let’s go Mr. Premier, let the talks for self determination begin! The UN charter is right on point!

The headline is kinda deceptive. I opened it thinking the draft resolution was exclusively for the VI.

Reading is fundamental. They approve a document specific to the BVI, it says that right there.

    Sorry for few typed errors.
As I have said, in reference to the USA. That country aim is to force (dictate through deceptive tactics) their political will worldwide under the veil of democracy. Most people don't recognize this fact. When they don't get their way, they used sanctions, and or military means.
We have many local issues to correct before we can accept, and act on what the UN special committee has said. Most UN nations follow the US lead.
We the people, the politicians employer, have the right to choose our destiny, not the UN special committee.
I don't hate the people of the USA, but I cannot in honest agree with their dominant tactics used on most UM members on various issues. Do you know only five nation of the UN have veto power?

Ian not a politician, nor do I want to be one, but I desire the best for the people of the British Virgin Islands, same should each of us.
Righteousness do not has a particular colour, nor does its originator human being of flesh.
I am not begging for anyone approval. My honest opinion has been written.

INDEPENDENCE?? Why though? Take a look at what is going on here in the BVI, look at the size of these government contracts and look at what we get in return, every 4 year it's close to 1.3 billion dollars passes through each government and we dont have S#*t to show for it. For example the roads that we drive on are the worst of any, the schools are falling apart, we don't have price control because every government officials has some business or shares in them. So why talk independence, do you to suffer even more by the elected officials or we want the have the watch dogs (UK)? I take the watch dogs any day. People I ask of you not to fall for that trick again, Andrew Face said he was fighting for his people but he was busy making drug deals along with others, and still was making deal with contractors on how to rape public funding.

The high school will take 11 million dollars to build, now ask yours where is that possible for 4 walls and that price cost don't include furnishings. Haycraft built a school for them for a million dollars and all the government had to do was furnish it and can't do that up to this day. So people please wake up independence is not the way to go right now or any time soon. Also tell the Pastors who benefited from the government with contracts for consultation (contracts over $300,00) and to equip the hospital with TVs ($500,000) to go and sit down it's no way TV's cost that amount of money. And all of you who benefited from government contracts especially those who inflated the prices triple the cost stop organising these marches and protest cause I don't see what you're fighting for, It's the UK country not yours

@Thing to think about: Independence is the logical choice. We'll need independence to free associate, We'll loose all special privileges' of self-determination if we integrate so, independence is the logical choice. The UN is suggesting that the decision be made by the year 2030, so we're are running out of time. I'm assuming that if we don't pick an option we'll default into integration. Instead of declaring that we are not ready we better start working on it!

Sovereignty is a noble goal but the UN is simply a larger bird of prey that wants to control ours resources. They else want us to implement “gender studies” in our schools. Look at the education part of the first draft of the ECLAC / UN guided “SDG plan for BVI through 2036”.
#wakeuppeople!! True sovereignty is not beholden to these global organizations who will tag, track and trace / control everything if they have their way. Already reports of fishermen being harassed multiple times by a “survey boat”. Photos on the net of tracking devices implanted into sharks and other ocean life. Lots of questionables that you, the reader, should be asking about!!

Love for God our Creator, and other humans is the only power that will unite nations in oneness and purpose.
Special UN Commetee does often brings people together physically, and partially, but not mentally together.
Referendum is only good when justice is proven, and rightfully shared to all our community people fairly.
So that tell us that the great power that is existing is the namely is LOVE, when it is shared righteously among all our local, citizens, belongers, exprats, and visitors too.
Humans comes, some excelled to great heights in various carriers. after a time they have already died, but surely as others before us we too will die, but genuine Love will never experience death, because Love is eternal.

Note: I admit that at times that write what some persons like, and their are time I do make mistakes, as we all do. But as far I can see, all political acts the do help to elevate or inhance the lives of other human is evil. Good governance is necessary for the good of all people everywhere on this planet, named earth. The BVI cannot be excluded. Vote your conscience. Like or dislike.

As a BVIslander and any BVIslander as a matter of fact should aspire to be free to make its own decisions. Yes I aspire for independence from the UK. That said, we need the systems in place to strengthen democracy and prevent corruption at every level.
