'UK’s view' is Israel’s actions in Gaza cannot be described as genocide- Gov Pruce
This is according to Governor of the [British] Virgin Islands Daniel Pruce.
Genocide is an internationally recognised crime where acts are committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.
Israel launched a military campaign to destroy Hamas in response to the group's cross-border attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 253 others were taken hostage.
More than 34,480 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.
Governor Pruce said the UK Foreign Secretary has been clear too many civilians have been killed and the need to see Israel take greater care to avoid harming civilians and destroying homes.
“The UK’s view is that Israel’s actions in Gaza cannot be described as a genocide but the UK also remains clear that formal determination of genocide should be based upon the final judgment of a competent court,” Governor Pruce stated.
Israel coming under pressure from global allies
Meanwhile, the Israeli government is coming under growing pressure from its global allies and the families of the hostages to agree a deal.
A deal agreed in November saw Hamas release 105 of the hostages in return for a week-long ceasefire and some 240 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
According to the BBC, mediators from Egypt, Qatar and the US have been attempting for weeks to broker a new agreement that would secure another pause in the fighting and the release of the 133 hostages who Israel says are still being held, at least 30 of whom are presumed dead.
Earlier this month, Hamas rejected an Israeli proposal for a six-week truce and the release of 40 women, children and elderly or sick hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
Hamas said it was sticking to its demands for a permanent ceasefire that would lead to a full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes.

Quite frankly, I don't expect him to say otherwise. Both the U.K, and the U.S are not honest brokers in this conflict. How can they be when they support one side (Israel) by providing them arms and other support in this conflict, and pay lip service to the Palestinians?
How can they be honest brokers when every resolution that condemns Israel's action in the UN are vetoed by these two countries?
Israel is doing what Hitler did to the them. They have not learned from their own history. They have turned from being an abused and almost eliminated people to the abuser and daily eliminator of Palestinians.
No matter how the U.K, and the U.S keep propping up Israel, Israel will never know peace until it agrees to a two-state solution that will allow both Israelis' and Palestinians to live side by side with each other in peace. Short of that, they will never know peace.
They need to start by acknowledging that not every person who speaks out against their conduct in this war are anti-semetic.
The posing is sickening now, where is the credibility?
Why involve us Virgin Islanders in this and taking a stance that VI-landers would find disgusting?
Its like saying what happened back then can not be described as human slavery, stop being evil & we wont need to rewrite world events.
Every conflict that comes up this man's position is involving us in as players.
Its a pattern. They want us to fight for them. Flying Ukraine flag, good for you. Whats next are we going head to head with North Korea?!
Legislators seriously do something. This position doesnt treat us right with a COI during covid, wresting with the health minister during covid, using hurricane Irma as a pretense for saddling the territory with debt, not assenting to bills relating to therapeutic relief, yet here getting us involved in combat affairs halfway around the world.
The last thing we need are enemies. Atleast the theives arent blowing people away and they havent been arrested yet, and we want to fight terrorist? How?
We have a history of slavery and a history of emancipation. Every year we celebrate with all welcome to participate white black everyone.
Being in charge of forgein affairs is a serious position, reserved to resolve the most serious negotiating for our well being, & secure our borders, not chirp up at every opportunity. Seen not heard. Relay it to the premier and let the premier say it as VI-landers would.
Better yet leave us out of it. As Christians we should be sending aid as would be called for if it were a natural disaster.
9 days ago. So we see with independence they can make their own decisions in support of what is humane. Interesting.
After all, she-Israel-is your child , the mastermind of Great Britain and the United States!
In 1948, the resolution was approved to grant that spit of dirt-statehood, without the care nor concern that Southern Palestine be allowed similar privilege.
Yitzhak Rabin agreed with Yasser Arafat about dual statehood for Southern Palestine. And he was assassinated by one of his own!
And I guess Great Britain was in agreement with such actions!
Is it, Mr Pruce that you are of Jewish descent, and hence, your statements should be seen as agreement of genocidal tendencies?
I don't expect you to answer.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, has, through its world conquests, for centuries, sanctioned mass killings and genocidal imperatives toward the darker skinned peoples of this planet!
..And it continues!
Please can some BVIslanders organise a protest locally? I will march with you but I am afraid to be seen as a ring-leader of political opposition given I am only guest in this Territory.
SO HIDING AMONGST THE PALESTINIANS , ISN'T WORKING / AND THE ISRAELIES HAS THE RIGHT TO RESPOND / ( IF YOU LET PEOPLE USE YOUR HOUSE TO THROW STONES IN YOUR NEIGHBOUR'S HOUSE , WHAT DO YOU EXPECT THE NEIGHBOUR TO DO ❓️ DUUUHHHHHHH
This man needs to be recalled
I read an article that said Africans were slaves in what is now Palestine/Israel, up until the early 1900's. I also read that the black Palestinians of today are discriminated against by both Israelis and Palestinians.
Blacks cannot continue to be mistreated and yet be expected to take sides in problems like these. Only China has the diplomatic clout and skill to mediate this, if the two sides would be willing to abide by the outcome.
