ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Virgin Islands icon and businesswoman Patsy C. Lake says she believes the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) recommendation for direct rule is a long-term plan of the UK.

Ms Lake made the comments during the May 2, 2022, demonstration where scores of Virgin Islanders protested the possible suspension of the  local constitution and imposition of direct rule.

Speaking at the event, Ms Lake said she was proud to see young people out in numbers to stand up for their rights after realising what was happening in the territory.

“When we started to protest against Wickhams Cay, it was just a handful, and quite a few kept saying… they ain't going to get through.”

Ms Lake was part of the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement, a fight for the people of the VI to support their right to land ownership in the territory.

“While some may think that the representation that has come out this morning is not enough… let me tell you this is only a small representation because the organisers didn’t have enough time,” she added.

UK had long-term plan - Ms Lake

Ms Lake said the arrest of the Premier and the events that followed was a long-term plan for the UK to take control of the VI.

“I am asking you all, stand up!” she told the those gathered in demonstration against UK direct rule.

“I am in total and complete support of everything. Whether we have or we don’t have… all of us going in the barrel to conquer us,” she added.

She called on Virgin Islanders to regroup and stand up against the UK, pointing out that the people of the VI are now more educated than ever before.

“I am in total and complete support that our constitution should not be removed,” Ms lake added.

Ms Lake also called for Governors to be held accountable for some of what has happened in the VI.

I would like to see UK send an experience administrative contingent to work along with the new government to clean up the place and put us back on track. I do not think in this close net society and knowing they all have secrets in their closets that at this crucial and serious point that locals alone can fix this massive problem.. It would be smart for the new Govt to reach out to Britain for on the ground help and guidance to walk along side them for 2 yrs. In this case this will be a more reasonable request Britain can't and won't refused. And will eliminate the two year direct rule thought.

She needs to go look at cleaning up the sewerage from around her expensive building on the highway. It’s distasteful.

Pedestrians cannot get to the sidewalk without dodging the mess at the entrance of that building.

The BVI is a financial burden to the UK, the UK has no desire to take over. Once the BVI has shown they are capable of self government, the UK will be pleased to grant the BVI independence. This is the truth, or you can choose to believe the corrupt BVI politicians and their rich friends

Hate to burst your bubble but the average UK citizen doesn't even know this place exists... if they did and understood what it costs them and they are not even allowed to work here... you would get that freedom in 10 minutes flat... they would flick these islands off of them like it was a flea... then the US would move in here and remind you what you had lost.

I agree with your comment. Why on earth would the UK want to take over the BVI? Can anyone who think the UK wants to take over the BVI, explain how the UK would benefit from take over?
      • UK don’t want (10/05/2022, 08:07) Like (2) Dislike (1) Reply
UK would benefit in the same way anyone else would benefit by allowing their just released from priseon relative who was inside for drug additiction and thievery. BVI GDP is < 0.01% of the UKs. BVI population adds another 0.04% tax payers to the UK (if it took over). It’s like a 1 cent coin on the ground. As shiny as it might be, most people don’t bother picking it up.

Financial Burden you say? How ? When?. BVI stopped receiving grants from UK since the 1980s. If anything they seem quite eager to want to take over. If we we really were a financial burden they would not be knocking at our door step threatening direct rule? Please do your research before spreading misinformation. This Territory was built from Tourism and Financial Services. That was all us NOT UK. Please do some reading and then comment intelligenty next time.

The Governor and the running of his office is funded by the UK. That is a direct expense that for the average UK taxpayer (who pay sales tax of 20% as well as tax on their income of 30-50%) would struggle to understand the benefit for. In addition, the UK contributed $32 million to BVI and Anguilla post-Irma, plus they provide an unquantified contribution by way of the Navy boats which offer hurricane support. You are misinformed and need to take off your tin-foil hat.

Sorry but aren’t most of the hotels across the BVI foreigner owned and funded so actually no you didn’t build your tourism.

Please it's obvious you just come lately how is the BVI ever a Financial Burden to the UK. Get off of that high delusional horse. In the 1700s the UK was in a tailspin so they set policies to suck off of their colonies including the united states where they set a lot of taxes.

The colonies rebelled and some gained independence. Though this is not entirely the same thing. We have elected some criminals to our house of assembly and our system needs to fix. The UK must take some blame for laying down in bed with each of these parties when it suited them and allowing the sore to fester until it burst. The people here are the real victims.

I like your idea. Too many boards in this little place, which is also seeds of corruption and a total financial waste. I totally in support of One Board serving more than one Dept under the same ministry..To add. Why Labour, Immigration and Police can't have one Board, they all fall under the umbrella of Law enforcement...Just saying .

We will need to dissolved all existing boards.. Put a new an open process in place to select new board members where the names are published in the News papers for a month for the public to know who they are and a process for the Public to raise their concerns in any..

Horrible suggestion. You clearly do not have an understanding of the nuisances and specialized fields of each department. No way the Airport Board members, could have the knowledge and understanding needed for Sea Ports or for Tourist Board marketing, or for Cruise. They are totally different skillsets and areas of expertise.

Uk taking over might not be a bad idea . Cause truthful the bvi needs an reset . New leadership and new politicians. Time n time again we elect people who've been letting us of the bvi down over and over. Some of us only turn a blind eye because they are our family and friends or because we benefit from them being in power. I think we can do better but are afraid of change and cause we've been controlled n brained wash. The people that are standing up are considered crazy when they speak their minds

Thank you for calling out the obvious truth here.
The subject of the article is just one example of how we need to "reset" the political and governmental culture of the territory. What we have in place is in no fashion whatsoever ready for the independence so many myopic individuals have been calling for.

Why is it that when we do something wrong in this place it is always somebody else fault? Why can't just admit we are wrong accept responsibility for that wrong and see how best we could resolve the matter? We know fully well that some of the past Governors attempted to get involved in certain matters that were occurring in the Government and we called that out saying that they were getting too involved in our business. Remember during the early days of COVID when the then Governor was appearing at Press Conferences? Did we complained that he was getting too involved in our business? While I am not in favorfor direct UK rule, should the accused who is brought before a court and found guilty be allowed to choose how he/her should be sentence according by law for that crime? Hon.Lady thanks for your past contributions to the territory. What you and the other renowned men and woman did was right and under different circumstances. The BVI have backed itself into a corner and a proven cloud of corruption hangs menacingly over our heads. This is the time get rid of the "cold" by blowing our nose, wipe it clean, take deep clean breathe and live again The worried people are those who have grown rich from the coffers of the people of this territory while others are given handouts. Probably the table will be overturned and all will see what have been going on underneath it all these years.

The UK is not in the process of a take over because of what Andrew did only, there is so many other things that was and has been going on for years. Who wants to get mad, go right ahead. I think the UK should step in for 2 years and put things in order. People is tired of the corruption and victimization.

Methinks the Government should look into the renting of Cutlass House for the Premiers office , the renting of the Pasea building for the Port Authority and the Hotel Paradise for the covid quarantining. Did the Premier give the contracts to a family member and how much were they paid? The Governor should maybe ask Patsy Lake these questions for the answers.
