Although the United Kingdom has held back on suspending the Virgin Islands constitution, many believe the Governor is using the Order in Council to suspend the VI Constitution to manipulate the elected government. Some have gone as far as saying the governor is the puppet master and the government the puppets. Photo: Facebook

SAINT GEORGES, Grenada– Director General of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Dr Didacus Jules has compared the British approach to the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) reforms in the territory as one where the Virgins Islands is being treated like a child.

The OECS Director, appearing on an episode of the Narrative with Calistra Farrier on October 27, 2022, said the method is almost as if the United Kingdom (UK) wants to control and direct the VI at the same time.

“The approach being taken by the British in the situation, it's almost like you know you have a child at your home that you're trying to correct and direct, yet you say that you're doing that to lead them to self-determination.”

Governor-led VI may not be best approach - Dr Jules

Comparing the situation to the education system, he said while there is a debate on discipline and correctness in the school system, some people are calling for rigid imposition of discipline, which he says may not be the best approach.

“I think it's the wrong focus. What we need to focus on is not enforcing discipline but on teaching responsibility and by giving young people the opportunity to be responsible,” he said as an example of the UK/VI relationship.

Dr Didacus hinted that a Governor headed country that would come with the suspension of the local constitution cannot be the best way forward.

“The unilateral determination of issues by a British Governor cannot be more abiding and superior to an elected government making decisions and being held accountable by the people of the BVI.”

Let’s start behaving like law abiding citizens. Stop the cronyism and corruption, the drug running (good luck with that), invest properly in education, and treat people with dignity.

Given the evidence presented, it very much looks like the unruly child is in need of some direction.
On another note, given the evidence presented regarding the former Premier's nefarious dealings, if the leader of the country is so eager to get involved in such schemes, it very much looks like the unruly child is in need of some discipline.

That is because we are children lacking the maturity to be honest and open. We need direction because we do not know how to live without corruption. And funny that the OECS is fighting for this and not for the mistreatment of their citizens who we labelled as downislanders.

What about good government free from criminal activity.
What about a clear vision for the future.
Our government should represent the best of BVI and should welcome any assistance from the UK without worrying about getting caught in smuggling and such activities.

If the government stopped acting like children, maybe this wouldn't be necessary. They need to earn the respect back by proving they are capable of running the territory.

The man spot on. While we always want to tell folks to stay out of people affairs remember we are our brothers keeper. Our associates are looking out for our best interest. UK heavy handedness is not in our best interest and that's a known fact.

He rushed to Grenada to serve as deputy secretary of Education in the ill fated PRG under Maurice Bishop. He supported a regime that seized power in an unlawful coup against st an elected govt, which proceeded to suspend the constitution, impose draconian People’s Laws, shut down the free press, imprison detractors, labelled counter-revolutionaries, and seek to impose a Marxist-Leninist state on an unsuspecting population. This is what he should compare to the possibility of direct British rule in the BVI, which is totally legal, on a dependent OT, if not desirable. Don’t try to hide your past.
