HANDSOME BAY, Virgin Gorda, VI- The body of local fisherman Bernard George was already in a state of decomposition when discovered at Handsome Bay Beach on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025.

This may suggest Mr George was dead for more than a day. It is also unclear if a missing person's report was filed.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) in a press release on Saturday, March 1, 2025, said it is investigating the discovery of the body and also disclosed that it was already decaying.

"Upon arrival, an investigation was immediately launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the discovery."

Police appeals to public for info

The RVIPF is now appealing to anyone who may have seen or had recent contact with Mr George to come forward.

"Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is encouraged to contact the RVIPFs Intelligence Unit at 368-9339 or anonymously via the Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477 (TIPS)."

Police said further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Body of local Virgin Gordian found @ Handsome Bay Beach

-identified as retired fisherman Bernard George

Sometime early this morning, Saturday, March 1, 2025, the body of a male was discovered at Handsome Bay Beach on Virgin Gorda.

Family members have told our news centre that the body is believed to be that of retired fisherman Bernard George of North Sound.

While the deceased lived in the Valley, he also worked for many years before his retirement at the Little Dix Bay Hotel and Resort. After leaving the resort he took up fishing and used to dive for whelks and conchs.

His body is on its way by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Marine Boat to the state-owned mouge in Road Town, the capital city, on the main island of Tortola where an autopsy will be performed to confirm the cause of death.

The late Mr George is believed to be in his late 60s and was born in Virgin Gorda.

The management and staff of Virgin Islands News Online extend our condolences to his immediate family and other loved ones.

So unfortunate. Condolences to the family and friends. It seems so traditional. Few years ago I loss my dad in the same situation around the same kind of season. I know of others as well. I pray that all future fishermen or woman take an extra person with them and just have each others back.

An extra person is a great idea, as would be wearing personal flotation devices when on the water. Would also be great if everyone was taught how to swim and water survival tactics.

You’re so focused on colour instead of your soul and spirit. Yeshua does not look at colour.

The ignorance of some of you who are fixated on the colour of His skin.
