Two scores by Chalwell hands Cedar Rugby Championship!
Tries by Mary Pringle and Kia Turnbull in the first half cancelled out two from FLPS allowing the teams to reach half time with the scores level.
However, a second half double by Chalwell and one by Justine Bryson secured the victory.
“It was good victory. It was a tough competition, so to win it is very pleasing,” commented coach Adam Cole. “The improvement I have seen over the past years with rugby, really shows it’s starting to develop and the credit for that goes to the work of coach Sam “Solo” Solomon.”
Cole was also quick to praise his players and Captain. “We had a few stand outs today, Braeden Caldwell for one, he’s the type of player who chases everything down. The girls, Justine and Mary really stood up and Leo Forte led from the front as captain.”
Forte was also quick to credit his best players. “I’m feeling very, very good,” he said. “Kai (Turnbull) and Braeden are super fast and can score from anywhere. Justine and Mary really spread the play which helped us too.”
Francis Lettsome’s Coach for the Day, Damien Brown said the kids hung in there and played to their best, everyone had fun and it was a good game.
In the semi finals, Cedar “A” overcame Cedar “B” 3-1 after a dynamic first half had knocked the wind out of their school mates. Last year’s defending champions, Ivan Dawson Primary School (IDPS), were knocked out 3-2 by FLPS, despite a spirited second half comeback by IDPS.
Coach “Solo”, looking a little weary has already turned his thoughts to the 2012 Tournament.
“We had some exam delays this morning but 7 teams finally got here and it was a great day. This was the second time for the year the trophy had changed hands. Teams are getting better and putting pressure on each other. Ivan Dawson won last year and got beat in the semis this time around. Next year there should be a bigger pool of teams as other schools are starting to show interest so again the standards will rise.”
