ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Two doctors will be called to testify on Friday January 27, 2012 on behalf of Gary Lester Evans, an Elmore Stoutt High School teacher who was found guilty of fingering a student, regarding some “peculiar” illness he has.

Dr. J. S. Archibald, who appeared this morning January, 23 2012 for the first time on behalf of Mr. Evans, made the application in the Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Tamia Richards.

Evans was to be sentenced today, however, Dr. Archibald informed the court that he got involved in the case after mitigation would have been heard. He disclosed that Dr. Heskith Vanterpool and Dr. Marjorie Yee-Sing were willing to reveal Evans’ medical plight.

In light of this, Crown Counsel Christilyn Benjamin said she had no objection to Dr. Archibald’s application.

Evans, 52, of Lower Estate was found guilty of indecent assault late last year. The pastor for 16 years was accused of fondling a then 13 year-old student of the ESHS where he had taught for many years.

The offence was reportedly committed on June 4, 2010 at the school. Evans had entered a not guilty plea and the trial started on March 17, 2011 where some seven witnesses were called.

It was reported that Evans touched the private parts of the VC while asking her the whereabouts of her mother. He had reportedly placed the student on his lap also and was only discouraged when the VC attempted to injure him with a piece of metal.

Evans had said that he hugged the student in an act of consoling her after she had indicated to him that she had difficulties with Mathematics.

The maximum penalty for Evans' offense is five years imprisonment.

All of a sudden you more fed up than anybody else. Was it your child in the matter? You got some nerve to blame the mother, where was she when this incident took place? It is not until a matter hit home that we understand how someone feels. If you are so sure he didnt do it then release him. God is high but he looks low. He cannot be bought by slick talkers nor all the money in the world. Jusitice will come one day.

Why out of the blue, for many people and even authorities every girl is lying now, when we know that abuse of children is very eminent in this Island, from time past the misstress of men were their own step daughters. We know it well how many young girls got children for their step and even their own fathers. WAKE UP! is a reality. Why every child is lying now?. Half of BVI is full of women that are still carrying the burden of what happened to them in hands of relatives. Please let us know that a girl that is sexual abused will never be the same, is a mark for the rest of their lives, their innocence taken. After a man is cut every one feels for him what about the CHILD?

As a kid, with much experience of the world to learn you tend to look up at close and important adults in your life for guidance and support. If the girl really was molested by Evans (I'm not in the position to say), this is a major breech of that natural trust.

He's a teacher! Every teacher knows that it is not ok touch students when you are alone. Even if it was only a hug, he should have known better.

That's the thing. Sometimes they need that hug for that extra encouragement.
