PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI – Seventeen students graduated from the 2013 Class of the Technical and Vocational Educational Training (TVET) Programme at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) yesterday, June 25, 2013.

The courses included house wiring; air conditioning and refrigeration; general hotel and restaurant skills; computer and office operational skills as well as plumbing. The programme lasted for one year.

President of the HLSCC, Dr Karl Dawson urged the students to reflect on their internship period in the workplace and make a judgement about what was good, bad, right and wrong. He also implored that they remember that within the workplace, good attitude is often more valued than good skills.

“With a good attitude you can actually acquire the skills and you’ll find that employers are willing to teach you the skills if you have a good attitude, but with a bad attitude, you in fact bury the skills that you have worked hard to acquire,” he said.

The College President asked that the students take full advantage of any certification levels made available through the HLSCC and also encouraged that they seek to advance themselves with regard to their basic education.

Dr Dawson added, “As I encouraged you a few weeks ago, don’t stop learning… I encourage you to ensure that this experience which we now celebrate would not be your last formal learning experience.”

He asked that they seek to build reputations in their respective fields to add to their skills and also encouraged that they strive to be responsible and informed citizens who are aware of the many issues that will affect them throughout their lives.

Dr Dawson also thanked Education Minister, Hon. Myron V. Walwyn for his vision, advocacy and support for technical training in the Virgin Islands.

Meanwhile, keynote speaker and architect Mr Dion Stoutt endorsed the importance of good, honest hard work and ensuring that opportunities granted in life are truly earned and acquired accolades based on merit.

Stoutt, the Managing Director of STO Enterprises Ltd and AVC Construction Co Ltd, told the graduates to challenge themselves to be the best in their respective fields and to find a way to differentiate themselves in their work environments. “Put yourselves in a position to one day soon open your own business and be the best service provider in the trade to your customers,” he said.

He explained that there was no exact blueprint to success and told the students that though it isn’t easy, they have to stick with it. Stoutt quoted NBA superstar Lebron James in advising the students that commitment was a big part of success.

While urging the students to find their way to get on one of the projects within the Territory, such as the airport expansion or pier extension, he asked that they prove themselves. “In our community, word of your work gets around fairly easily, and if you are the best at what you do, you will always be in high demand,” Stoutt said.

He also announced that he would be introducing apprenticeship programmes in all of his companies in a show of appreciation for the opportunities that he had received.

Hon. Walwyn in his congratulatory remarks, encouraged the students to recognise the opportunity presented with their training to play a vital role as support staff within their various communities.

He said, “The memory of today will be important in helping you recognise, that you can overcome challenges and that you have proven before that you too have what it takes to succeed with the task at hand.” With their graduation, he said, they have confirmed their will and ability to stick to a task and come out on top to emerge as graduates.
